Windows will not use the unstalled sound card

I recently had to reload my wife's box. AMD Athlon 2700 on a Gigabyte
board with on board sound. Running XP Pro service pack 2. Reloaded from
a Ghost file of when it worked ok. No sound. Device manager shows the
sound card as working correctly, but in the sounds applet in the CP
there is no sound card installed. Ran a CD in as an upgrade install and
same results. INstalled a new sound card. Same result. It shows the
card in Device Manager, but not in the CP. I have been working on
computers for 20+ years and have never hit this one.

Am I missing a service here or something?. I'm sure it is something
simple, and I really do not want to wipe and reinstall all her
software. She has been using this box for something like 3 years and
has a TON of oddball little programs she uses as a teacher on it. I
would spend all my free time for the next 2 weeks getting everything
reloaded.

If you installed a pci soundcard you MUST switch off the onboard sound chip
in bios. You didn't state that you'd one this in your post btw, (before you
fly off the handle :)

....AND btw, you should edite your NG account and spoof your email address,
or it will get harvested and you'll be in for EVER so much spam !! :)

Did that, the thing is that it shows up as working properly in Device
manager, yet the CP applet says there is no device installed. Does not
matter if it is the onboard that I set active and remove the
soundblaster card or if I disable the onboard and install the
Soundblaster. I have seen hundreds of computers and this is the first
time I have hit anything like this. I'm sure there is someone out there
who has seen it hundreds of times. At least this is not a client's
system, though I'd be quicker to wipe it out and start form scrtach
then since I'd get paid for it.

BTW, I'm not too worried about the spam. I get a ton already and I'm
getting ready to move to my own server and domain in a couple of
months. The Barracuda gets most of it without me ever having to see it
anyway.

Maybe a dumb question, but when you install the SB card, and disable
on-board sound, you do plug the speakers into the correct jack on the
SB card?
I've done that myself, and spent hours looking for no sound. The
speakers plugged into on-board, but the SB card being the active one.

Good luck.

The speakers would plug into the new sound card. Consult the documentation
for that particular card, or get the info. from the card manufacturers
website.

How about resetting CMOS, and/or removing CR2032 for a few hours ?

I haven't used Gigabyte boards for many years because of hardware
peculiarities, or malfunctions if you prefer, that are, when you get them,
VERY hard to solve - when one gets that rare problematic board. The last
Gigabyte board I fought with, would occasionally lose hardware access to the
A30 line, (hardware access channel to upper RAM memory above 1mb - if memory
serves!), and even after removing the CMOS backup battery / shorting CMOS
jumper / or shorting out the two solder points, (whatever it was on that
board - looong time ago), one would have to wait for several hours for a
disc capacitor, (not a can ...a DISC!), to completely discharge. Once or
twice that motherboard had to come out, and all capacitors around the CMOS
had to be shorted out to get them discharged, to clear that A30 line fault.
.....evnetually that board went into the bin IMHO the ONLY, satisfactory
place for Gigabyte motherboards ! ...a distant memory tells me that it was a
GA586TX3 ...with a 440 or 430 TX chipset on it.

Have you checked, or rummaged for bios problems with your hardware mix i.e.
Gigabyte board/model, SB pci card/model ?
....anyway, as suggested by others, (and unless there is a hardware fault on
mobo and/or fault on SB card), I bet you're getting led up the garden path
by something simple and obvious that you'll end up kicking yourself for !
:)
....swapped out / double checked speakers, ....speakers switched on <VBG>
....as already suggested by others, speaker signal lead / jack plugged into
correct hole ? e.g. green one / NOT light blue one ? :)
.....what does DXDIAG | sound Tab report ?
....correct driver installed ?
SB card will install and work okay in a different system box ?
....there is of course the remote possibility that mobo sound chip AND SB
card are faulty.

.....and of course you have my sympathies :)
....do let us know what it was, if / when you find it./

...."after fitting pci soundcard and switching off onboard sound chip in

I'll try resetting the bios tonight. DXDIAG shows no sound card
installed, but the equipment tab will show either one as working
correctly (depending on which one I have running) The thing is that the
damn thing was working before I had to reload it. The relod was due to
something getting screwed in in IE due to something my daughter did on
Myspace that got past a hardware and software firewall. The SB card
works in another box on the network so that is ruled out. I switched to
Gigabyeboards after having a load of problems with ASUS boards with a
short life span. I've been using them for about 4 years now and out of
at least 70 builds this is the first one to give me any trouble. I have
of course downloaded the latest BIOS updates and drivers for the board.
It is the exact same configuration as the system I 'm using for email
right now. All the settings are the same, yet no sound. It's really
starting to p*** me off. If I have to wipe this system it gets a new
TIAN board and CPU while I'm at it.
