Windows will not start up.

Windows will not start up. My computer will get as far as
windows is starting and then it will switch screens and
then start dumping physical memory to disk and I don't
know what to do.

Before Windows starts up, press F8 and see if you can load into Safe
Mode. If it hangs, post what is causing it to hang, if not, try
uninstalling any unnecessary software from Add/Remove. Also, run a
virusscan on it if you can access it ;)

You may have to do a Repair, which should be quite simple. Just post a
follow up to this if you need further help.

I tried to use the saft mode but that doesn't work
either it still starts dumping physical memory disk. And
then restarts. What do you mean by repair?

Ok, sounds like you are going to have to repair. Here is how you do that:

1. Boot off your Windows XP CD
2. When asked to Install or open Recovery Console, choose Install
3. Windows will find the existing installation and offer to Repair it,
press R to repair.
4. Windows will automatically attempt to repair your operating system by
overwriting the core components.

It is possible that some of your applications may not work properly
after a repair, but at least all of your data is safe and you can easily
reinstall the other software if anything is broken.

Thank-You I tried booting off the windows xp cd but
nothing happens when I put the cd in the drive, it just
keeps restarting the computer. I am unable to get into my
account to do anything at all. Is there anything that you
think that I might be doing wrong.

Did you make sure to set your BIOS to boot off the CD? If you can't
boot off the CD, are you able to boot of a floppy? Try www.bootdisk.com
and download the Windows 98 SE bootdisk. To set your computer to boot
from CD, you will have to press either DEL key or F1 (those are the two
most common, but could be something else as well). It will load the
BIOS and look for boot priority or boot devices. Make the CD-ROM first.

Can you tell me how to make the cd boot off BIOS? I am
not sure how to do that.

I sure can try. It is different for every motherboard. Usually when the
computer first boots up, it will say press F1 or DEL to enter Setup. Try
pressing both of those every couple of seconds when your first press the
power button. It should take you into a bunch of menus know as the BIOS.
Now look for something similar to Boot Sequence, Boot Order, etc. You
should have the ability to set it to use CD ROM first, then harddrive.
Change it to CD and exit the BIOS Saving changes. Now stick your CD in
and the computer should boot off it for you. Don't forget to change it
back when you are done.

Also, it is just as easy with the bootdisk I mentioned ;)

I was able to get to the part where you say to install or
start recovery console, but there isn't anything that
says to install. Should I try the recovery console?

Whoop, when it gives you the option to Install, you want to choose that
option. Then it will search for existing installations, then it will
offer to repair the existing installation of Windows XP. You will do
this by pressing R.
