Windows will not boot

My daughter has a Gateway 1200 series notebook which was
working fine. She tried to start it yesterday and windows
will not boot. It goes to the Gateway logo screen then
Windows XP screen, then a blue and white page flashes on
the screen so fast cannot possibly read it then the screen
comes on saying:
We apologizes for the inconvenience, but windows did not
start successfully. A recent hardware or software change
might have caused this.
If your computer stopped responding, restarted
unexpectedly or was automatically shutdown to protect your
files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to
revert to the most recent setting that worked.
If a previous start up attempt was interrupted due to
power failure or because the power or reset button was
pressed, or if you are not sure what caused this problem
choose Start Windows Normally
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration
Start Windows Normally
This does not work, tried last known and it just went
windows screen then back to this page, tried all
possiblities and just goes back to this page.
The windows product came in this notebook as far as I know
and I got it second hand and do not have a recovery cd.
How do I get windows to start? If I buy a windows xp cd in
the store will this help?
Teenage daughter having a fit about this-please help!!
