Windows Virtual Memory minimum too low

I have seen several posts about the error message "windows virtual memory
minimum too low". I too am getting that message about once a day on my
computer.
Please don't refer me to Alex Nichol's article-
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.php
I have reviewed it and I don't really see a definitive solution to my
problem. While he does provide alot of info, he isn't clear on what settings
should be used. Additionally, I do NOT have NAV or any Symantec programs
installed on this computer, so that is not the problem, as he seems to think.
I run several different spyware and adware programs regularly on this
computer, including ad-aware, spybot search & destroy, and spyware guard. I
have run several different virus scan and trojanscan programs in the last
couple days, including Housecall, Panda ActiveScan, CleanUp! and Trojanscan,
but I still keep getting the virtual memory error message. I am running XP
SP2 with 512 mb of ram. Does anybody have any specific recommendations on
what those settings should be?
thanks,
Bob

How large is the hard disk and how much free space?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring Task Manager and select the Process Tab.
What is the Commit Charge?

Hope this helps.

Start by setting your virtual memory to "let Windows handle it". IIRC,
you have to click "Set" as well as Apply/OK. Since you know your
computer is clean, the only other thing I'd check is what is running at
startup by doing clean boot troubleshooting:

Gerry,
thanks for your quick reply. The hard drive is 60gb, with 29.1gb free.
The commit charge is 305780k/688836k
Any ideas?
thanks,

If you have already used
Start\Control Panel\System\Advanced\Performance\Settings\Advanced\Memory
Usage\Change
to let Windows set the virtual memory on your %system% drive, which is
usually C:\,
and clicked "Set" as Malke says and rebooted BUT you STILL have the
problem, you may have a corrupt page file.
First uses "Search" for pagefile.sys (with the view enabled to see hidden
files) to check that it does indeed exist and how many instances there are.

Then boot into Safe mode and delete all instances of pagefile.sys and reboot
back into Normal Mode.

That should fix it. There is no point fiddling about trying to set a
special size for the page file on a Laptop, just leave it to the OS.

How are you controlling your virtual memory? Either "let Windows handle
it" as Malke has suggested or set a minimum of 768 mb. You do not need
to set a maximum.
