Windows update

I am running Windows XP with Service Pack 3. Although I have automatic
updates set, I occasionally update manually. I just installed the very
latest version of IE 8 but it crashed so often that I went back to IE7.
(Motto: ignore betas - why do I never learn?)

Now, if I go to the Windows Update page it insists (as usual) that I install
the ActiveX control saying:

This website wants to run the following add-on: ‘Microsoft Update’ from
‘Microsoft Corporation’. if you trust the website and the add-on and want to
allow it to run, click here...

I do 'click here' but it goes straight back to where it was - endlessly!

What am I doing wrong? I cannot run Windows Update.

Thanks for this. I disabled my anti-virus software but it wasn't that. More
thoughts from youy or anyone else would be welcome. It has only started
happening since I uninstalled IE8 and re-installed IE7. Before that Windows
Update worked perfectly.

Try this:

Start>Run>cmd [enter] (opens the command prompt)
net stop wuauserv [enter]
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll [enter] (you should get a message
saying the registration succeeded)
net start wuauserv [enter]
exit [enter] to close the command prompt

Now go to the Windows Update site and see if things work. If they do, great.
If they don't, post your question in the newsgroup for IE8. It is a golden
rule of computing not to install beta software on a production machine or
on any machine you aren't willing to wipe. However, the people in the IE8
beta newsgroup may have already encountered this and know the answer.

Thanks Malke but there is a crossed wire here! If you look at my post you'll
see that I UNINSTALLED IE8 and re-installed IE7. So my problem was in IE7 and
not IE8, but only occurred after I had dipped my toe into IE8.

In fact, I have just solved the problem by going to the Tools menu (in IE7),
selecting Internet Options, then Security. I clicked on Custom Level and
then set the 'Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins’ and 'Script ActiveX controls
marked safe for scripting’ options to Enable.

THIS SOLVED THE PROBLEM! I didn't work this out myself but googled 'ActiveX
problems' it and found it on someone's website. I think the problem
occurred because a Microsoft technician (trying to help me get IE8 working on
my PC) got me to disable a whole lot of stuff!

Thanks for your help,
Richard

Glad you got it sorted. However, I did read your original post correctly.
You were lucky in that uninstalling IE8 didn't make any permanent changes
and you were able to go back to IE7. Not all beta software uninstalls
cleanly so I stand by my previous caution.

Thanks for updating the thread and happy to hear your issue is resolved.
