-- Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.47.966.0)

Installation date: ‎02/‎12/‎2008 01:42
when this update was installed overnight through automatic updates i logged
on the next day and all my folder settings had changed the folder view and
permissions and the only way i could rest them was to do a system restore.i
dont know if this was the reason but since i removed it i have had no
problems the main problem was when i tried to download a file to a folder i.e
desktop or documents i kept getting access denied error thanks for any ideas

The Defender definitions did not do that, guaranteed. I think it much more
likely that you fell victim to the very malware the definition was going to
defend against. I beta'ed the "MS-Anti-Spy" fore-runner to Defender, and I
can tell you that the system was designed to prevent exactly that. That's
not to say that surfing cannot walk you into the malware before the update
has a chance to defend you. IMO, it's likely you were just in the 'wrong
place at the wrong time'

It's probable that the malware has disabled System restore, so I think your
only real hope is a restore from backup. There are several anti-malware
recovery systems out there, but the more advanced jerks who makes that stuff
is ahead of those. If you have no backup, I suppose they would be worth a
shot.
