Windows update

[Humpty Dumpty]

I haven't updated my Laptop (HP Compaq Presario 700) for at least two years,
maybe three.
When I access Windows Update, it stalls at the message:
"Checking if Windows has the latest updated software..."
The window also says something about downloading an active X control, but I
am not offered the option to download it. No error message, nothing.
I tried to download some update from the download page, but it takes me
again to the same stalling window.
What can I do?

It was Winows geniu Advantage... without it u can't dowload updates

Do you have SP2 installed? You should download and install it first if you
don't have it installed.

Make sure you have a backup of any important data before you start.

Shame on you for waiting so long to update. Why don't you WAIT
for Microsoft to finish it's scan and it will ask for you to
agree for the download of the active X control. Patience is a
virtue. Don't be in such a hurry.
