Windows update stuck after partial install of sp3

I started a download of sp3 and it got stuck after it had downloaded the
file. I think avast was virus checking it and taking a long time.

I had to cancel the install (which hung while cancelling) and then powered
off my machine.

Now when I select windows update in explorer it just hangs.

Any ideas?

I think I have fixed this.

What I did was this.

1. Reboot
2. Stop Automatic update service.
3. Rename c:\Windows\Softwaredistribution to
c:\Windows\Softwaredistribution.old
4. Start Automatic update service.
5. Reboot.

Now a different problem but I will post a new thread for that.
