Windows Update - SP2 Missing

B

Bruce

I'm running WinXPHome SP1. The new Windows Update software installed
itself months ago when I used Internet Explorer\Tools\Windows Update.

When the Automatic Update icon pops up in the system tray, I always
click on Custom, rather than Express, so that I can see what the update
is. I've been letting SP2 sit there for months, since I'm a little
leary about it, and just haven't had the time to troubleshoot any
probelms that may arise. (I've have SP2 on CD, and will install it with
the CD.) However, I still use IE and the go to the Microsoft Windows
Update page to look for important updates.

I went to the Window Update page today, and there were 7 high priority
updates for me, most of which came out today, but SP2 was not listed. I
opened the Automatic Update icon in the system tray, and the same 7 high
priporty updates were there, but SP2 was no longer there; SP2 had been
there for months.

Where did SP2 go?

Any ideas?

Sincerely,
Bruce

Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not available to install from Windows
Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates

Thanks, Taurarian.

That KB was interesting...Microsoft advises removing TV Media, or using
their patch that allows you to install SP2 without removing TV Media.

...but it doesn't appear I've got TV Media. I wish I did, because then
I'd know why SP2 isn't available to me. As a matter of fact, I just
checked my other XP SP1 machine, which is used very infrequently, and
SP2 is no longer available (it was on November 30) on it, and it shows
no signs of TV Media. I called my daughter at college, and the same
thing has happened to her Dell laptop, but she has no signs of TV media.

I'm very careful if I download anything, and I run Adaware and Spybot
every few days. I've checked all the forums for recognizing and
removing TV Media, and I have no indication of having it on any of my
machines.

It's not in the Add/Remove panel, the registry, Taks Manager, the
Startup Folder (msconfig)...I just can't find any trace of TV Media.

Registry searches are negative as are Windows explorer searches
performed with all files and folder visible.

I can't find anything to remove, and I'm hesitant to use the Microsoft
patch if I don't need it.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Sincerely,
Bruce

Hi

I assume you are referring to the Prescott update in method 4 here:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=885627

How new is your computer, and what brand/model is it?

It is older than February this year, you don't need the update for
sure. If it Dell, you don't need it either, they have never delivered
computers with this problem.

Anyway, if in doubt about you need this update or not, it should be
harmless to install it anyway (before you install SP from your CD).

Torgeir,

I was talking about the TV Media problem, and that none of the three
machines have this installed on them.

I never considered the Prescott issue, but since you brought it up, I
checked, and none of my machines have the Prescott C-0 stepping
processor. One is a May 2004 Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop, one is a March
2003 Dell 4550 P4, and the third is a Gateway, circa 1997 P2 350 Mhz
(yes, I'm pushing it).

I be stumped.

Sincerely,
Bruce

Hi

Then my only suggestion left is that you install SP2 from the
CD you have (it's better to use that one instead of WU anyway).

Thanks again. I think that's what I'll do. Perhaps the WU or AU is
giving a false positive (I wish more users were reporting this occurence
as of 12/1/04), or being overly 'conservative' in order that uses check
these issues.

Sincerley,
Bruce
