Trying to help my Brother-In-Law 3000 miles away.
He had to reinstall XP Home for about the fourth time which
leads me to believe he did it correctly. (eXPerience). He is
his own worst enemy. <eg>
He chose the option to Reinstall and Save current files.
After doing so, he re-installed SP2 via CD before
checking anything. As of now, everything is working fine
with one exception. When he goes to Windows Updates, he gets
the *Checking for updates*, but the progress bar only
appears for about 2 seconds. After that, every minute or so,
the pointer changes to an hourglass for about a second, but
that is all that happens. He doesn't get the chance to
select Auto or Custom install.
He is using the newest Norton A/V, Firewall and NIS, but
they were not installed when this problem started and
turning it off makes no difference.
With the exception of Windows Updates, everything else
appears to be working fine. Any suggestions are greatly
appreciated, of course.
