Windows Update Problem

I've been working on a WinXP Home (SP1) PC for a friend that managed to get
it completely infested with viruses and spyware. You couldn't even do
anything online because the second it had a connection the internet pop-ups
galore appeared and the computer basically froze. There was even a virus of
some sort that would stop the SP2 install I would try to do and delete the
installer!

So after using several tools like AVG, Ad-aware, and Spybot (all downloaded
on a different PC) I was able to get it clean enough to do the SP2 install
and could then navigate the internet without the PC freezing or crashing.

After the SP2 install I went to Windows Update to try and get all the
post-SP2 updates. But, alas, it will not work. Everytime I attempt to use
Windows Update the PC will download the updates and then bomb when it gets to
the actual install. It just gives an error stating that the updates were
"unable to be successfully installed". BUT if I look up the individual
updates and download the installers for each patch and run those they install
fine.

Well, this is clearly too tedious because the PC is still dozens of patches
behind. Plus, I would like to be able to turn on automatic updates and then
give it back to my friend so that her PC will keep itself updated.

I Googled around for a while and found some suggestions, but all have
failed. I've tried deleting everything in the
"C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution" directory, stopping and re-starting the
windows update service, re-registering like 4 or 5 dlls suggested on the MS
site somewhere (I forget which ones), installing a fresh copyof the .NET
framework, etc... I tried quit a few things people said worked for them, but
nothing has worked for me yet.

Any ideas?

there is free technical support from microsoft just for "update issues". Go
to microsoft.com and look for the email problem form which will have an email
address. I guess you can do a search for troubleshooting updates or
something to the affect......

databaseben,
Copy the following into notepad and save it as a BAT file, then run it:

regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
REGSVR32 wuapi.dll
REGSVR32 wuaueng.dll
REGSVR32 wuaueng1.dll
REGSVR32 wucltui.dll
REGSVR32 wups.dll
REGSVR32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 mssip32.dll

Or you can type them all individually at the command line. This is a
compilation of a lot of files that can cause problems and has saved my
tail many times. Hopefully it will help in your situation.

Sadly, that did not work :-(

I also can't seem to locate this free e-mail support for Windows Update that
databaseben mentioned.
