Windows Update Problem

Fred S *****

Just went to Windows Update and got a request to DL the latest Win
Update software - said OK and it downloaded.

Next it says download complete, initialization complete and then
proceeds to install the Windows Genuine Validation Tool.

That fails and has failed for three more tries.

I went into ADD/REMOVE programs and the Genuine Validation Tool appears
there but there is no option to REMOVE it.

I sent MS a note about the problem but have not got a reply so far - can
anyone advise on what to do next?

Thanks, Fred

PS - I went to the MS site and ran the Validation tool there and it
worked fine, that is my system was validated but the Win Update Tool
continues to fail

To remove the WGA ActiveX -
Windows Explorer (w/ Show Hidden, System and Protected Files
enabled). Explore to C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files
Locate the entry Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool.
Right Click the entry and choose "Remove". Then retry WinUpd.

The WGA tool you need is different from the one already installed.

By any chance, have you recently uninstalled a Norton application, Fred?

Try the following workaround:

The WGA Diagnostic Tool has been updated to
correct a problem experienced by some users.
Please download and execute it from:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

After running the tool, please return to Windows Update and try again.

There is no entry in there for the WGA Tool.

Carey sent a link for an exe file that did the trick! See his post.

Thanks, Fred

Thanks Carey,

That worked! After running the file (from the link you provided) I
re-ran WinUpdate and it worked normally!

Thanks for your assistance and take care,

Fred S
