Windows Update Not Working, Error Code 80246008

Tanz

I have been all over these forums for two days trying to find a solution to
my problem. I have not been able to install windows updates. My BITS
service will not start, and is returning error 80246008. I have tried
restarting it, to no avail. I have also tried uninstalling spybot and
McAfee, did not do a thing. Also attempted to replace the windows update
temporary folder, as directed by tech support. This took me about 6 tries to
finally get it to be replaced, and it still did not help the matter. I also
found a list on a post in here of .dll files to register or something,
attempted all of them, which the computer said was successful, and this still
did not solve the problem either.

I need to get the windows updates because my school's network will not allow
me to accesss the internet without having the updates, and as far as i can
tell, none have been installed in about a month.

If it helps, this problem seems to have coincided with my comptuer becoming
temporarily incapacitated due to the motherboard having to be replaced.
(Thanks Dell!) A few days before the motherboard died, i installed McAfee
Enterprise via my college's account, as it is required on all their
computers.

I am simply at a loss here, and microsoft tech support has decided to start
ignoring my requests for support, as far as i can tell. Thanks guys.

If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it, I can't sit at school all
day without a computer!!! How am i supposed to do homework!! lol. Thanks in
advance.

It sounds to me as though your version of Windows could be detected as
non-genuine. I had a recent experience with this after replacing a
motherboard on a Shuttle system I built myself. I took be about 9 months to
get the board replaced under warrantee, because I was busy, and had another
machine I could work with in the mean time.

Does anything else fail? Can you run the games? Can you get to control
panel via start, control panel?

Can you tell us what version of Windows? XP? Vista?

If Vista, this update is worth trying:

You said you tried some procedures involving re-registering dlls.

http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...0b0b7e8767e&dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate

at the bottom of the above page is a post with two such procedures--I want
to be sure you've tried both of these?

Yes, I saw that same post and tried all of those. Shame, they didn't work,
lol. I've never been so frustrated in my life.

I am running windows XP Home Service Pack 3.

Hello Tanz,

I'd recommend resubmitting your post here:

Start a E-mail request help ticket.

Help and Support

<http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx?rdpath=1&gprid=9860>

OR

I'd recommend calling 1-866-pcsafety if you are in the U.S. or Canada.

Elsewhere, call your local Microsoft subsidiary, or the number for paid
support in your locale--and ask for the free help with virus or
security-patch related issues. This help extends to spyware removal as well.

Other than that, I'm about out of ideas, so good luck with it.

Let us know maybe someone else can conjure up something else to try.

Good luck

Hello Stu,

Please stand-by. This retirement is kill me ;-) little by little (I'm not
kidding)

Now I'm more busy than ever. Repit. Please give me time to contact you.
Believe me, I have a good excuse ;-(

What I have to comment, is not only copy and paste. This time I have to use
my marbles, I'm looking for a one word to explain everything. I repit, only
one word.

Stand by ;-)

Always is good to munge your address for safety.

I'll second both Robin's and Engel's recommendations:

Microsoft does offer free phone support for security patch or virus/spyware
related issues, and I believe yours qualifies.

Dial-a-fix is also safe and effective, and well worth trying.
(that's why I asked for the Windows version--it isn't applicable to Vista.)

One word eh how about catastrophy? And your marbles? You must treasure those
at all costs - LOL! One word could be difficult for me .<smile>. Just let me
do the typing and you answer `yes` `no` or `what`? We`ll have a question and
answer session. I ask the questions you answer yes, no or what? Process of
elimination will get us where we want to be.

PPI`s ?? Plan Position Indicators. ? Thats old technology these days - a 29
inch Sony Barco display would be the order now. Daylight viewing? Yes. they
come with that order these days. They have the ability to relate code to
callsign conversion and give you pretty colors of your choosing. That is. You
give me code and I can convert to callsign . For example code 1234 can be
converted to KLM 123. Will also give me your height at any stage of your
flight and destination . for example LHR. OR EGLL??
