Windows Update Error 0x800C0008

Past few months, have been unable to use 'Windows Update' site.
Searching for updated results to "Error 0x800C0008"

Automatic updates still work.... as well as driver updates when using
'Device Manager' .

Found this posting where OP reports correctly (in my case, at least):

" " " " " " " quote:
"... trying to directly make an https:// connection to the Windows Update
server URL
https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
seems to get through as a workaround"
---
(OP URL: http://mailman.mit.edu/pipermail/winpartners/2004-May/000096.html )
" " " " " " " end quote.

Interestingly.... after connecting directly as suggested above... running
"Windows Update " from start menu does _NOT_ produce the error...
....but for how long?
....and I don't trust the results, which are 'no updates available'.

My latest update from the web-site was more than 2 months ago (12 JUN 04)...
I expected to see at least one available update since that time.

I'd like to get this fixed... or know that it fixed itself.
I can use the 'work-around' URL again in case of future error... but it's
annoying!

I recall having past problem with Windows Update... involving an expired
certificate... but believe I fixed it.
Unfortunately, don't remember how!
Could the same problem happening again?

Can (or need) 'Window's Update' or some component be reinstalled?
Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I just looked through the troubleshooter for you & found this:

'Scan quickly reaches 100% and displays “There are no updates availableâ€
message / log file lists error 0x800C0008 or 0x80072EE4'

Problem Description:
When you use the Windows Update scan feature, the scan quickly reaches 100%,
and then displays the "There are no updates available at this time" message.
The log file contains error 0x800c0008 or 0x80072EE4.

Resolutions:
The error is caused by SSL (Secure Socket Layer). The scan process requires
SSL and if the date and time on your computer varies too much from the valid
date and time of the SSL certificates on Windows Update, the process will
fail. Please verify that your computer’s date and time are accurate and that
the Internet Explorer language option is not empty.

To check the language setting in Internet Explorer:
1. Click "Tools" and then select "Internet Options".
2. Click "Languages".
3. Make sure at least one language is listed in the "Language Options"
dialog box.

Please delete the Internet cache and cookies.
1. Click "Tools" and then select "Internet Options".
2. Click "Delete Cookies".
3. Click "Delete Files"

Issue Applies To:
Windows 2000
Windows XP

I hope this is what you're after

Hi Hardcoder...

Looked at that troubleshooter...
The Scan reaches 100% and then produces the error.
(Just tried it again, and the error is back but works again after connecting
direct as described in OP)
The error message includes some statement about system time - but my system
Date/Time are correct.

The last suggestion in the troubleshooter, re: updating MSN Messenger looked
intriguing... so I did a repair on Messenger... and was able to download and
install 1 avalilable critical update. Prior to the repar... the update was
found but failed to install.

Oh... and re: your questions from your prior post... the Scan DOES reach
100% before the error is reported & my access rights are Admin.

Thanks for the suggestion.
