Windows Update and Windows Explorer

I have a Compaq laptop that I recently restored (XP Home) to the factory
image. It restores to SP1. When I go to Windows Update to bring it to SP2,
it does four preliminary updates to bring it current enough to get SP2.
There are 4 updates applied - Windows Installer 3.1, Windows Genuine
Advantage, BITS, and a Windows Update, (KB's 982130, 898461, and 842773.)
After these updates, something in Windows Explorer breaks. (SP2 is NOT
installed yet.) When booted, A Windows Explorer window will open on its own
to the search screen. It will then "flash" in the search area bouncing
between two different search screens. If minimized, another Explorer screen
will open ready to search. In Internet Explorer (6), it's as if the search
button randomly gets pushed on and off, so the screen keeps getting pushed
to the right, and if you are typing, it will go to the search window instead
of the main window.

What can I do to stop these behaviors, other than never update again.

Download the full SP2 installation file (disregard the title that it's for
IT Professionals - it will update a single computer just fine) or order SP2
on CD, then after doing the restore, immediately apply SP2. You don't need
to install other updates before SP2. After that go to the windows update
site and install updates just a few at a time testing in between to make
sure there are no problems with any particular update.

Download Windows Service Pack 2 Standalone Version

Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD
