Windows unable to run 90% of programs after failed install Norton

Today I bought Norton AV 2006 for my computer that was previously running
2004. Before installing, I uninstalled 2004, as the last time i installed a
Norton product failure to uninstall the last version created many problems.
Seems to me like doing it may have caused just as many this time, actually
worse. When I tried to install AV, i recieved a fatal error. I did not
write down the error number unfortunately, but I ended up restarting my
computer. On restart, i logged into my account (which is the admin) and all
my icons were replaced with the white generic icon-less picture. Trying to
open up a folder does nothing, no programs run. Using the run command from
start menu fails to allow running of anything. Windows explorer doesn't
work, and if I try to run something this message appears. 'The file does not
have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an
association in the Folder Options control panel'.

This would be an easy task if I was able to open the Control Panel. Running
in Safe mode does not allow me access, and System restore is also without an
associated program, so I am unable to revert to my previous settings. I'm at
a loss. I cannot run any programs except for Mozilla Firefox, and I have no
way to install NV if the problem turns out to be a lurking virus that
attacked as soon as I uninstalled.

Please help me! I can think of no reason why installing a program to
increase system security and stability has made it less secure and stable
than it was beforehand....

I would try a repair of XP it may help. What you can do is first is remove
that HD and make it a slave drive and put it in the computer that you are
useing now to go online and look at the drive contents to see if everything
is ok on the drive. If the drive is intact then remove and repair.

You could try the Norton cleanup utility to totally clean out Norton
remnants and see if that fixes your system. Then reinstall it

Search for SYMClean on the Symantec support page
