Windows/Temp directory contains 900K-1G of undeletable .tmp files

My nephew's Vaio was attacked by a "trojan dropper" a few weeks ago, according to a NAV scan. The virus was removed but his <Windows/Temp> directory now contains nearly 1G of tmp####.tmp files. Each is the same size (1885K) and where I have indicated ####, there are actually groups of sequential numbers. Any attempt to delete or remove these files results in the error message "can't find source file or disk". I even tried deleting them from DOS (Command Prompt) with no success. Any ideas?

boot to safe mode command prompt only
then delete the files
that should take care of it!

Hi LBwireman,

Create a folder called 'trouble'
move all the tmp files in there.
Open a command prompt on the parent folder
Open task manager and with it close windows explorer
on the command prompt, type rd trouble
Open a new task in task manager called explorer.exe

That should get rid of them.
If you cannot, boot to the Recovery Console and remove the folder with
the troublesome files (typing: rd trouble) from there.

Good luck

go to the system folder in control panel then pick the advanced tab.
Environment variables.

Change the location of the tem files that should allow you to delete the
files!
