windows task manager

My computer has been doing many funny things lately. I have been a common
visitor to this discussion group lately. I am trying everything to gain
control back. One new question I have is .......on my task manager I have
noticed that under the processes tab I am getting these image names like
f97e89.exe and d513ad.exe. These, whatever they are, change slightly every
time I log on and off, to something like 202f46.exe or 9bdef7.exe. Don't
google it I already tried. Their VM size (virtual memory size) is
continually growing. My page file usage goes up also.??? I only came across
this because I keep receiving "low virtual memory" messages or after my
computer sits for a while it locks up, and I have been looking for a
solution. I used to have Norton and have removed it because some people said
it was bogging my computer down. I do not use my computer for much more than
surfing and playing around but that has become tough lately. I am using two
different spyware killers also just in case. Is there anyone that can help
me?

Random named .exe files are most likely some sort of malware.

Update your antivirus and anti-spyware programs and run full system scans.

Did you remove Norton and not get new antivirus software?

If true, get AV software NOW! Here's a free one that I use...

Get Your AVG 7 for free!

Thanks Wesley, I will download Av but I did some more research. I found the
strange .exe's on my computer. There are hundreds of them. The description
for them is "Microsoft Help". They are in my system 32 folder. One of them
was also in my prefetch folder which I erased. Does this make sense? Can I
get rid of them in the sys 32 file?

James,

I would not just arbitrarily start deleting files in the WINDOWS\system32
folder.

Get antivirus software now. Update it and run a full system scan. AV
software will most like get rid of most of the bad stuff and you won't have
to go through hundreds of files manually.

Wesley, you are awesome. I got rid of Norton and uploaded AVG and xoftspy.
Wow! What a difference. I can't believe I have been paying Norton to sit on
its butt. AVG cleared up all those funny exe files that were running and for
freeeeee!!! There were hundreds of trojan horse files. My computer is
almost tip top. Now if I can just get rid of that pesky Winfixer
popup................
