Windows startup question.

I ask because it determines who does have the problem I trying find.

Problem: During boot post BIOS is checking drives looking for bootable disk
and if the order is say floppy, CD-ROM and Hard Drive and the system hangs at
the CDROM check for bootable disk.
Windows is never loaded is that totally a BIOS problem could a problem with
Windows be causing to problem?

Before you know hears the got you, fact I have left out so far. If BIOS
find as the Windows install CD in the CDROM, it proceeds normally and Window
starts up with no problem. Second point to hear if you have two CDROM’s the
Windows install CD can be in either one.

Other than this one little point the system is rock solid and runs fine.

One more point if you make the boot Hard Disk the first in the boot priority
list before the CDROM the boot process hangs when checking the hard drive.

The all started after clean install and I has done two clean reistall sense
to the problem was first notecied.

On the Dell I was working on, the two hard drives are connected to a Promise 100
ATA controller, but the DVD drives were hooked up to IDE 1 & 2....the drive on
IDE 2 was not bootable. I had to switch the drives so the burner drive was on
IDE 1 to get the DVD burner to be a boot drive if necessary. There is a ZIP 250
drive on the 2nd chain of IDE 1 and I expect that would be bootable too.

Do not think your problems are related, Boot Array of four SATA II are on
High Port Add-in RAID Controller plug-in to an PCI-Express slot. The two
CVD/CD Drivers one is SATA plugged into the primary motherboard SATA
Controller, then DVD/CD Drive is plugged it the Motherboards Primary IDE as
Master. I have tried each of the DVD/CD drive one at time plugged in to all
SATA and IDE ports. With not change in the problem.

Thank for you in put and suggests.

If you dont have a bootable CD in your PRIMARY cdrom drive then disable
that setting.

As I stated in my previous messages, if the Boot Array(hard Disk) is listed
first in the BIOS Boot Priority list the Boot Process hangs at the hard Drive
and will not start Windows loading.

There are two DVD/CD Drives on the computer and no mater which is the
primary DVD/CD drive in BOIS as long as the Windows Installation CD is in one
of the of the DVD/CD’s BIOS detects it. Then BIOS does its little phase
asking if you would like to boot from it and after the delay to loads a
starts Windows normally. However if the Window Installation CD is not in
either DVD/CD Drive the BIOS hangs after checking the last DVD/CD drive and
does not load Windows.

The problem has nothing the to do the Boot Priority List, or the order in
which boot drive are listed on the Priority List, If the BIOS does not find
the Windows Installation CD it will not load Windows.

As long as it find the Windows installation CD, before the Windows Boot Disk
it will proceed to the Windows Boot Disk and Load Windows. Even if the
Windows Boot Disk is the first drive checked by the BIOS it will not Loal
Windows from it.
