I am running windows xp on a dell dimension pc

Upon rebooting after an application (Musicmatch) update i received an error
message about windows files being unreadable. Windows ran the repair utility
and replaced a bunch of files. Now, when I start windows the desktop and
taskbar appear but when I click on an icon no window opens. An hourglass
appears next to the cursor but no window. This problem occurs in safe mode
as well. I cannot use system restore or get into "my computer" because the
windows wont open. the only icon in the start menu that works is the run
command line. I have tried reparing windows from the manufacturers boot disk
but the problem remains. Can anyone help me out.

Thanks in advance

if you press f8 at the boot menu you can try using last known good
configuration. but repairing windows from your cd should have helped you out
as well.... maybe musicmatch is trying to connect to the internet before your
desktop loads up. while in your desktop do cntrl-alt-del Itask mgr) and end
all of those "user" processes. the desktop should appear. but if not go to
the programs tab in the task mgr and run explorer.exe after that appears
try to unistall that bad software.... or do a restore to a state that worked
before downloading the update
