Windows SP2 Causes System to by Unusable

Blaine Hamrick

I installed SP2 from Windows Update. After installation it reboots 2 times
then gives me the text screen giving me the choice of starting normally or
in safe mode. When I select "Start Normally" it just reboots again. It then
becomes necessary to start in safe mode and do a system restore to return my
computer to working condition.

After system restoration winver gives the Windows version as "Version 5.1
(Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633:Service Pack 1)." There also is an entry under
"Add and Remove Programs" for "Windows XP Service Pack 2." In addition,
there are many entries beginning with "Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q..........."

Since my computer is custom built, I'll just throw out that it is a PIII 1.2
GHz on the 815 chipset. Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

Thank you for your reply! Unfortunately, I am running a simple Pentium III
processor, and there is no "mpegport.sys" as Knowledge Base Article 575474.
Perhaps you might be able to point me in another direction.

Uninstall SP2. As long as you have good vrus checker & firewall, you don't
need it anyway.

SP2 is a critical update. Its not meant to replace Anti Virus and Firewall.
It has better support for Anti Virus and has better Firewall.

Firewalls and anti-virus programs are free. No need for XP2 to get that.
