Windows Sounds

My computer has stopped playing the Windows logon and
logoff sounds. I have looked at Sounds in the Control
Panel and it is set as Windows Default - I have not
altered anything and other sounds are ok. Not a major
problem of course but I am curious as to why this might
have happened. Does anyone out there have an idea ?
Thanks for reading.

There are a few possible causes for this. It is usually the result of
installing various software into Windows or from using a tweaking
program.

Something that has worked for several users is to install TweakUI for
XP. In the General section, place a check next to "beep on errors."

Have you installed anything new lately? I lost startup, shutdown and new
mail notification when I installed one particular version of Nero Mix a
while back (they have since fixed this problem). I uninstalled the
program and rolled back to a date preceding the problem with System
Restore.

You may also have some luck by editing a few regestry keys:
I was able to restore the sounds be editing a few registry keys:
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21* [a long alphanumeric string]
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21*\Control Panel\Sounds

Highlight that key in the left hand side of the registry editor. Look
over on the right hand side. If you do not see

(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)

delete the registry key. NOTE: You may want to export that key before
deleting it. Repeat the same steps in the HKEY_CURRENT USERS keys.
After deleting the key, Windows will automatically create a new Default
key with the correct "value not set" already included.
