Windows sounds

I want my pc to play music files up to 5 mins at windows start. However, I
find that sounds in control panel will not list anything other than .wav
files.....not mp3 or midi.
I tried converting mp3 to .wav with Audacity and find that these begin to
play on startup but cut off after a few seconds, as if one of the background
programs causes the sound to close when it starts. One downloaded wave file
plays right through but tends to "stick" in the middle for a few seconds,
not always at the same point.
(Soundcard is Creative SB Live) XP pro + SP2.
Any ideas as to cause/fix would be appreciated.

Put the .mp3 file you want to play at startup in the folder
C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
