Windows sound recorde doesn't open

Dear Discussion Group,

I used to have a Windows XP system with which I could record sound from an
external device like a cassette player by simple plugging it into the line in
jack. The sound of the cassette would come through the PC's speakers without
any extra configuration needed.
Now I have Vista and this doesn't work anymore. Also, when I try to open
Windows Sound Recorder, I get a message that there is no device for sound
recordings. What does this mean?

Thanks for your help,
Jilt

basically your sound card isn't set up right therefore you have no recording
devices especially if you know you have a line-in and a recording port, my
suggestion is go to the maker of your sound card and download and install
the lastest driver for your sound card

If I understand correctly, the fact that I get sound from the speakers when
playing a movie doesn't mean sound received from the line in or microphone
jack should be heard as well?

I have difficulties finding the name of the maker of my sound card.
I've been adviced before to use Everest to find this out, but I'm not sure
where to look in the results. Under Multimedia - Windows audio, it says:

--------[ Windows Audio
]----------------------------------------------------------------

midi-out.0 0001 001B Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth
mixer.0 0001 0068 Luidsprekers (High Definition A
mixer.1 0001 0068 Apparaat voor digitale uitvoer
wave-out.0 0001 0064 Luidsprekers (High Definition A
wave-out.1 0001 0064 Apparaat voor digitale uitvoer

Luidsprekers = speakers
apparaat = device

I've also tried to update through Control panel - System&maintenance -
Device manager. Here, a "High definition audo device" is shown. The driver
can be updated manually, but if I do this, it says the best driver is already
installed.
