Windows Server 2003 IIS 6 and NLB

Hello,

We have two servers running Windows Server 2003 Web Edition. Both
servers are configured (IIS settings, COM+ and etc) the same. The
servers are using windows load balancing in order to balance the
workload (affinity - none). Till here everyhing is working fine. The
problem starts when the IIS on one of the servers is not responding
(lets say there is a certain problem causing for that), The windows
load balancing doen't detect that the IIS is not available and he
countine to direct request to that server. I'd like to know if there
is a way to configure that the windows load balancing service will be
able to detect that the IIS is not responding and then to direct all
the requests to the other server.

I know that this feature is exist in Windows Server 2003 enterprise
and datacenter editions ?(virtual server), but we are using web
edition and I think this featrue should be included in the web edition
also.

I'll appricate any help.

Regards,

Assaf

NLB is not service aware - in ANY version of Windows, not in Windows Server
2003 Enterprise, Datacenter, Web or Standard. You need a 3rd party service
like one of these:

- SiteScope by Freshwater Software (http://www.freshtech.com)

- AppManager by NetIQ (http://www.netiq.com)

- WhatsUp Gold by Ipswitch (http://www.ipswitch.com)
