Windows Security Alert.

After installing SP 2, everytime I reboot my PC, it takes a long time 1-2
minutes for windows to fully boot. The desktop and all the icons come up, but
most of programs in the task bar will not open right away, plus untill they
all do I can not do anything, if for instance I was to open my computer, the
window would open but the icons would not be there, instead the "Searching"
icon (the flashlight animated icon) appears and continues till the programs
finally load. Then I get the Windows Security Alert balloon, and it indicates
that the Firewall is not enabled (Which it should be and always is when I
shut down). However when I click the balloon it brings uip the window with
the 3 security optuions (firewall, windows update, and virsu protection)It at
first shows the firewall as being off, then on its own, it enables the
firewall, and all the other programs start running. Hence, I belive the 2
issues are related, I didn't change anything other then adding SP2. This has
been the only problem till now, but today when I booted it did it's normal
thing but NOW the firewall wont enable at all, and I keep getting messages
from the security center telling me it can't enable the firewall (have gone
to both the security center, and the windows firewall in the control panel
and can not get it to enable). Any ideas about the slow boot and the firewall?

Hello Bobby ,
Your problem may be that you had spyware or mailware, or a virus before
installing SP2. Have you tried system restore to set the computer to before
the download of SP? You may want to unistall SP2 and do a search for
vurus\mailware in saftey mode, search at least three times in safty mode,
then once after you reboot then Get to windows updates ASAP to reinstall SP2
plus the hotfixes plus all the security patches. You may have to restart a
few times keep going back to update site untill MS tells you there are hno
more updates for your PC. I bet this is the 20th problem today regarding
SP2. Most all of it caused by some sort of bug not being removed prior to
install,
Best of luck to you

Sad to say I tried your suggestiosn and still have the same problem. It
should probably been noted that I DID NOT get this problem right after
installing SP2 it was some time later (a month or 2). I currently am running
SP1 and are still experiencing the same slow load time. The PC boots into
Windows and after the Windows Welcome screen appears it goes to the desktop,
2 or 3 icons in the task bar open (Not all the programs) and the ones that
require a netowrk connection don't start (email notification, weather bug
etc) and my Norton Antivirus program starts up as disabled and can't be
enabled. After about 2 minutes, Norton enables itself and the web
applications start (as well as the other task bar apps) after this windows
works fine, untill I re-boot or shut down and we do it all over again. (It
does sometimes take a while for it to shut down out of windows though, and
occasionally Windows will have to force a shut down of a program).

I have tried reinstalling XP, have run several spyware and virus scans. I
have both Ad-Aware and the MS Antispyware Beta, and Norton Systemworks 2003,
all 3 are up to date, and are updated on a regular basis

Hey Bobby,
I asked around about your problem and most think it is Weather Bug.
It seems it installs some sort of spy-ware when it downloads thus becoming a
program that your firewall and spy-checker trust. Hope this helps.

Well, I had WeatherBug long before I updated to SP2 and didn't have a
problem. Like I said before, the problem appeard bout a month after i
installed SP2. I uninstalled WeatherBug, and no change. I have sense gotten
Sbybot to go along with Ad-Aware and MS spyware, and I ran them all in Safe
Mode and still haven't found anything, I even got the Malicous software
removal tool and it found nothing as well. What would be a suggestion to fix
this problem, I have checked my hard drive for "weird" folders and programs
and haven't found anything. I'd rather not format the HD, but it's looking
more and more like I'll have to unless I decide to deal.
