Windows Search

Entering a search in the Windows Search box does not return any results from
emails even when choosing All or Email in the advanced search dialog (Outlook
..pst files are in Documents\Outlook). Emails are returned when running the
search from the Start Menu search box. Does anyone have any ideas about what
might be wrong?

That's an odd one. Check your options at

Control Panel > Folder Options > Search
eg that you have it set for using the index

Also bear in mind that if you open up an ordinary folder, then the search
box will only search in that folder and subfolders.

It's odd all right. Keep thinking I've missed something.
Folder Options | Search has been left at default settings so for indexed
files file names and contents are being searched. I have moved Documents
from C:\users\... to D:\Documents and added it to the indexed locations in
Control Panel | Indexing Options. Shouldn't be a problem since search is
working fine from Start Menu. All .pst files are in Documents\Outlook. The
Outlook folder properties has the Index box ticked (although I'm not sure how
this setting relates to Indexing Options locations in the Control Panel -
perhaps this only relates to the previous Indexing Service). I've run search
from the Outlook folder drop down menu without any sucess.

Looks like .pst is an excluded extension by default.

Try putting a checkmark, if it's unchecked by the pst box at

Control Panel > Indexing Options > Advanced > File Types

I don't know why they'd show still up in a start search though, with that
unchecked. Possibly through being recent items (?)

You do need the 'Index box' in properties checked for the search to work.
Unchecking it is another way items can be excluded from the indexing.

..PST and OST files don't need to be listed in the Indexing File Types
dialog - they get indexed through MAPI in Outlook. If e-mails are appearing
in the Start Menu then indexing and search must be working. Unfortunately I
don't know why they wouldn't appear in the Explorer search results ...

Ok that makes sense. Thanks for the information Dave. Was also starting to
come to the conclusion that it might be more of an Outlook question than a
general Vista Search one.

Other than suggesting repost in one of the Outlook groups, I'm out of ideas.

Apparently I have the same problem, with Oullook 2000, so David you are not
alone and tjhe problem is not so odd.

Checking the the file types that are indexed by Vista (Control Panel >
Indexing Options > Advanced > File Types), pst is indexed only by name, and
when attempting to have its content indexed, only a "text filter" can be
applied. No wonder it cannot be forced for indexing.

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. The checkbox for .pst wasn't
ticked so I ticked it, chose properties and contents, clicked ok, waited for
the index to rebuild but still the same problems. I now noticed that it no
found emails from Start Search box either. I cleared the tick box, waited
the index to rebuild again but no difference - doesn't work from either.
Initially when I used Start Search box there were Favorites and History,
Files and Communications (with found emails) sections but the Communications
section no longer shows up. I'll keep playing with it but if anyone has any
other suggestions let me know.
