Windows Search freezes

I put the following post in Windowsxp.general on 2nd December without any
response, hence I am repeating here.

Windows XP SP3; Internet Explorer 8
When I make a search from Start > Search it list a number of files but half
way freezes. I have to shut it donw in the Task Manager. If I right click
the drive ans Search I get a higher number of files and ends normally.

See if this helps:

Disable Indexing Services
Start > Run > services.msc
Scroll down to Indexing Services, double-click on selection then select
Disabled.
Ok your way out
Close all apps and restart your system

Let us know if this worked for you.

Try this:

Open My Computer
Right click on your hard drive icon (C drive) and then select properties.
At the bottom of the window you should see "Allow indexing service to index this
disk for faster searches," uncheck this and click then click on ok.
A new window will pop up and select apply to all folders and subfolders. Once
complete, it takes a few more minutes to make sure that indexing is now
completely switched off.
