windows registry permissions

in attempting to make some adjustments i've "edited" my registry permissions,
which did allow me accomplish what i needed, but now i'm discovering some
other minor issues that MIGHT have something to do with this, namely that a
program i use to connect via ftp with a stored user/password won't save these
settings whenever i close and reopen it ... i've reinstalled the app to no
avail. i'm wondering, as i said, if i've somehow disabled the ability to keep
these settings in my registry. || my question is, how would i go about
restoring my regisry settings to their default ones - i'm of course logged in
with Administrator Abilities, so i shouldn't have had to do this in the first
place; in any case, i'd like to be able to simply restore these to their
original state - can someone assist?

Now that's an odd one... I don't think it's a registry setting? It *could*
be but, well, that's VERY unusual if the third party application is
controlling it's ability to store passwords via the registry. That's, well,
absurd to say the least.

Try an alternative application. Are other programs retaining their
passwords? If so then it's probably NOT the registry and you should stop
poking around in there. *grins* Head to
http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/freeware.html and see if you can find
something there that suits your fancy for FTP applications.

thanks, Galen. wasn't sure if they were or weren't even kept there - i
assumed so since half of it's hexed anyway... in any case, it's Macromedia
Dreamweaver, so i can't just replace it with a freebie... i'll have to find
why this is happening.

I have to poke around in my machine/registry - if i never broke anything,
how would i have ever learned anything?)

You can always save to disk and upload with an alternative program. I use
AbsoluteFTP after authoring web pages because it gives me the full
functionality of a FTP client. Then again, I actually did buy Dreamweaver
and I do use it once in a while the sad truth is I tend to code in Notepad.
Ah well... Anyhow, uploading via a client is an extra step and an extra
application but it has its benefits and might be a solution. Otherwise you
can consider uninstalling and re-installing Dreamweaver or, alternatively,
you can use a third party FTP client.

i, too, am a sucker for tradition (the allman brothers and hotdogs at a
ballgame) - i tell all coders i meet: if they'd give DW, as it is built
today, a chance, they'd see how it is geared to assist in the handcoding of
sites; it is not so much a wysiwyg as it is a full set of tools that can
amazingly well automate the whole coding process. traditionalists
automatically balk at the term 'wysiwyg', but DW TAUGHT me html, css (DW is
ALL about CSS now) and php (somewhat) --- and we "conformists" will have
built our third COMPLIANT website while the coders are still typing the
external js and stylesheets for the first one.

I've always wondered: what do handcoders say about washer machines?

"Me? i'll have NOTHING TO DO with those newfangled, automated clothes
washing MA-sheens. i handwash ALL my stuff !!"

go for it, guys. hand code away...

:) just kidding with ya, Galen. handcoders and young women still have me
completely amazed...

as far as my login info, DW automatically transfers dependant files
(external files, images, slices, preloads...), too, and checks links, and
corrects bad paths if i move a dependant file, and... it's just as easy to
manually retype my user/pwd as it is opening WSFTP or whatever - i DO notice
that real FTP apps seem to connect and transfer faster - is that possible?

Nah, I'm just too lazy and my time is too filled to learn more applications.
If I can do it one way and do it reasonably quickly then, well, yes. I'll
stick with that. Then again - I still don't use a mouse but I do tend to use
a clipboard manager these days.

Of course, they're doing less. Now if you were coding properly you wouldn't
have to check all the links and splice and dice and have your HTML authoring
software also make toast for you. *grins* Really, it's doing more so it's
slower I presume but don't quote me on that because even when I generate
code in an editor I upload it manually.

Code less, code better. ;)

*shambles off into the dark days of text editing* Actually - I do way too
much in Notepad. Maybe I'll grow up one of these days. ;)
