?? Windows Registry corrupted

Hello,

I don't know if this is the correct forum.

Help Please!

After an unsuccessful Windows software update with the error code 0x8007005
(I think), after telling PC to restart, but before it shut down, I received
the following message: C:\Window\System32\rundll32.exe "This file does not
have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an
association in the Folder Options control panel."

When the computer restarted, ALL the executable files icons have that
"unrecognizable" icon associated with them, including System Restore.
Nothing will work from the run command, including the system restore command.

This PC was running Windows XP Pro. I have the CD for reinstallation.
Although it loaded, the option to install did not work.

I tried the following:

Restart PC
Hit F12
Boot from XP install CD
Told Windows to repair the Operating System

It appeared as if it would repair the operating system, but I received two
dozen or more errors such as

1. Distribution Transaction Coordinator Set Up Error >Sub Component
Distribution Transaction Coordinator raised an exception while processing
OC_COMPLETE_Installation set up message.

2. D\nt\com1x\dtc\ntdcsetup\src\csetuputil.cpp (line 2748) Error Code
0x8007005, & then with (line 3429) Error Code 0x80020009 Access is Denied.

3. Failed to execute function n'DllRegisterServe()' in C\Windows\System32\
msdtcm.dll & then n'DllRegisterServe()' in C\Windows\System32\ comsnap.dll

The repair then continued, but I received numerous messages that there were
errors copying what appeared to be .jpg files with names like bluehill.jp_,
sunset.jp_, waterlil.jp_, etc.

Also during the repair I received a message that:

C:Windows\Sysstem32\regsvr32.exe file does not have a program associated
with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder
Options control panel.

(of course I can't get into Folder Options in Control Panel, even if I knew
what to do)

There were also messages that you don't have sufficient rights to register
the Certificates snap-in for the below:

C:Windows\System32\obdcconf.exe
C:Windows\System32\mstinit.exe
C:Windows\System32\rundll32.exe
C:Windows\System32\regsvr32.exe

When the "repair" finished the PC restarted, but I'm back to where I was
with the unrecognized executable icons, & System restore not running because
it does not know what to do.

I don't know what happened, & since neither system restore nor the repair
option from the Install CD work, I have absolutely no clue what to do. I can
see the folders in the Windows folder, but the associated files (icons)
appear not to know what they are supposed to do (an amateur's interpretation).

The only other option on the Windows XP CD was to install Windows XP (it
found the partitions on the drive (factory configured by Dell), but when I
selected the partition on which it is installed, I received a message warning
about having 2 operating systems on the same partition, so I did not proceed.

Sorry if too long, but I tried to note most of the error messages I saw when
trying to use the repair option on the windows XP CD, & NONE of my executable
files will work even through most icons know where the associated command
file is when I look at properties.

Can someone please help me fix this? Way back when in the dark ages of
Windows 95, I would have reformatted the hard drive & reinstalled the
operating system.

Thanks in advance.

I just noticed I can get into Computer Management, but the Help does not work

What are your anti-virus and and anti-spyware arrangements?

Hi Gerry

I've been running McAfee virus & spyware from AOL for a while now (on all 3
computers). I just switched to wireless broadband & networked 3 computers
wirelessly a couple of weeks ago. The PC with the problem is the one the
wireless router & USB modem were attached to.

If it's a McAfee issue, right now I can't get into any program to change
anything (other PCs OK0. As I mentioned, even the Windows XP Pro CD can't
repair this. Do I need to do a new install with deleting & reinstalling
partitions or is there another way to fix this?

BTW I noticed that in computer management, 1 of the few things I can open,
that the Local Users have a red x through it.

Maybe this info will assist someone with helping me

From another post, I am now able to get into regedit through Task Manager.
If ANYONE has a clue as to what I need to edit to fix this, I'll try.

I can see that the permissions for the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT are different from
the HKEY_CURRENT_USER; HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE; HKEY_USERS, & HKEY_CURETN_CONFIG.

Could the problem with no executable files working be related to any of
this?

If I can at least get the System Restore to work (I routinely manually
create restore points), I will then try to repair the Windows XP Pro from the
CD.

Of course, since nothing works on the bad PC, I'm on a laptop for this
internet connection. I can't even get a paste command to work on the bad PC
(tried to paste from a thumb drive onto bad PC)

You have two programmes I would not have on my computer McAfee and AOL.
You are unable to do a Repair Install. I am not sure what tinkering with
the existing installation will achieve?

What is your Windows XP CD? How is it described on the face of the CD?

Hi Gerry,

Unfortunately, where we live, dialup internet is limited. Once I'm sure the
wireless broadband will work (we can't get DSL or cable), I'll be
uninstalling AOL. What do you suggest for virus & spy ware? I know a lot of
people use Norton, but I also seem to see people posting with more problems
running Norton. I thought McAfee had a decent product.

The CD is Windows XP Pro Installation, distributed with new PCs from Dell
when I bought PC.

I was able to edit the registry HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT to match the users, groups
& permissions as are on my laptop (which also has AOL & McAfee), & when I
restarted the "bad" PC, everything worked except the Windows Updates are not
installing properly. I've sent the info to Microsoft via the site (the "bad"
PC is now on the network, connecting to the internet & sharing internet with
other network PCs); I just need to get all the updates back.

Thanks for trying.
Diane

I use AVG Free 7.5 Anti- Virus:
http://www3.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-virus/us/crp/0

Windows Defender for Spyware Real Time protection
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Windows Firewall

Norton has a poorer reputation than McAfee in these newsgroups. However,
this is a distraction.

Select, Start, Help and Support, Keep your Windows up- to-date with
Windows Update, Review your Update History and click on the Failed Icon
(if any) in the Status Column. What does it say for each failed
update??

Gerry,

After the Windows “repairâ€, & I use the word loosely, there were only 16
updates to install, it kept getting hung up on Security Update for Capicon
(KB931906), with an error code of 0x800706BE, but according to the Microsoft
site, I have over 270 updates installed (back to Sept 2002), including SP2,
yet I’m not on SP2. Is it because the Software Distribution folder in
Windows has a record of all of those updates & hot fixes installed over the
years & thinks I don’t need them? I bought this PC new in 2001 or 2002, I
think shortly after Windows XP Pro was released.

I’ll check out your links, I do use the Windows Firewall, but because of the
old version of XP, it’s still enabled through Internet Connection Sharing,
rather than a separate icon as on my laptop running Media Edition 2005.

Do you know what I need to do to get all the old updates I had prior to
the repair, including SP2?

Thanks again
Diane

Ooops, sorry I forgot to say that I deselected the Capicom update &
successfully installed the rest.
