Windows recognizes modem as something else

Posted this on Hardware site without any help.

After a year I decided to reformat and reinstall Win 2000
Pro. I am using an AMD 1000 on a Abit KT7A-Raid board
without Raid engaged. Windows will not detect my USR
hardware modem as such. Device Manager shows PCI Serial
Port under other devices and can't locate a driver for
said PCI. I downloaded the latest drivers from USR but no
help. Any Suggestions? Thanks ahead of time.

Did you physically remove the device, start up the PC, install the
drivers, shutdown, install the device, then startup the PC. You allso
need all the "motherboard" drivers for Windows 2000. including the VIA 4
in 1 drivers.

Here's what happens. When I insert the modem, Windows
says new hardware found. PCI Serial Port. Cannot find
drivers anywhere. With the install software, the modem
shows up in device manager as working properly but it
doesn't work. The PCI Serial Port under other devices
still has the exclamation mark.

Sounds like multiple "installs" at this point. Go into device manager
and remove all the instances of the modem or PCI serial port you
find(also show Hidden devices to get everything). Then Shut down and
remove the modem. Start the computer back up without the modem in and
make sure that there is no listing for that modem in any form. Install
the drivers at this point (if thats what the instructions say) and then
shut down and install the modem. Then start back up and the modem at
this point should be recognized and installed. If there are other
instructions to the contrary follow them.(as I am going from memory
here) Important thing is to get rid of all the instances you fine in
device manager.

I tried what you suggested and also went into oem*.inf and
looked for usr modem inf files. None found. When Windows
boots it again says PCI Serial Port found and cannot find
drivers. I put this modem into another computer with a
different brand moboard and got the same response. So the
problem is either the modem or Win 2000. The thing is
before I reformated etc. the modem had been running on
this system for over a year.

Did you get/download the manufacturers drivers for the modem and install
them BEFORE you put the modem in and turned the computer on?

Yes, I did. The download executes and places the drivers
in a folder USR on the Win 2000 drive. It does not contain
any installation files. This computer is dual boot with
Win 98SE and the 98 system does not recognize the modem
either. It finds new hardware as a PCI Serial Controller
and finds no drivers. Thing is this modem worked fine for
over a year in this machine. (Win 2000 only as I just use
98 for a second CD Burn program). I have a Win XP Pro
install that has never been installed because I like 2000.
I am going to install it on another computer and see if it
can detect the modem.

If another box acts the same way I think I would abondon that "modem"
and get another one.
