Windows problems.... PLEASE HELP!!

I have been having problems with a PC in my office. It looked as though it
got a 'project1' virus. My virus scan did not work. I tried to use the
system recovery console, but it is asking me for a password that doesn't
exist. Then I tried the Automated System Recovery. This didn't work because
I have no backup disks. I tried reinstalling Windows, thinking it woul
repair the infected file. NOPE. Now whe I boot I can see things normally
but I cannot access any file or the start menu. Is there any way for me to
get to these virus' and delete them from the DOS menu? I have no idea what
commands to use. I am really trying to avaoid reformatting because there are
numerous files I need to get off the PC. Please help I getting extremely
frustrated. Thank you

mmm..it's hard to tell what your problem really is. How did you get the name
"project1" as being of a virus? Your virus scan did not work: at the moment
or before? The first thing to try is to start up in "safe mode". Reboot and
just after the start-up messages on your screen, or a logo of the retailer or
manufactior, hit F8. To be sure you hit at the right moment hit it three or
four times in a row. Windows will start without loading several
(system)drivers, so you sceentop will show up in a lower resolution, larger
icon's and so on. But IF it starts up, you may feel relieved: the backbone of
your system is still in good shape. I don't know which virus scanner you have
installed but hopefully it can be started in "safe mode" of Windows. If so:
run it and also your anti spyware and anti adware progs. Let us see how far
you will come and talk further later on. Good luck.

I looked up soemthing that said the 'Project1' was a trojan (msdirectx.exe)??
I am not to familiar with this stuff. I have tried booting into safe mode
and it still will not let me access anything on the PC. Desktop items, start
menu, etc.. Nothing works. I am trying to find a way to locate the file and
remove it via DOS command. That seems to be the only place I can get anyting
to work.

Looking at F'secure, Project1.exe is the installer for the trojan,
there a number of files that you need to remove. See
http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/y2kcount.shtml .

From what i read, it seems unlike that the trojan would still be
there after a re-install.
