Windows Networking : Basic Question abt Remote Desktop access

N

Navodit

Hi

I am pretty new to Windows networking and have a very basic question:

I believe it is possible to log in to a computer remotely if one has a user
account on that machine. However, I am unaware of what is the procedure for
this, what are system requirements and how to configure the computer so that
I can remotely access it. The OS for which I want to learn abt this is
Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. I know that there are options like
RealVNC where we can control a system but I have seen instances when this
does not work... So can anyone throw some light on the subject and point me
to some online resources where I cd get information on this from scratch ?
Any help/hints wd be appreciated. Thanks.

It's called Remote Desktop, and it comes standard on Windows XP Pro, not sure
about Home. Here's one place to get started...

Remote Desktop is available (standard issue) on XP Pro and Server 2003. To
enable it, right-click "My Computer" and click the "Remote" tab. Check
"enable Remote desktop connections on this computer, then click the button
to select remote desktop users. If you are on a private network behind a NAT
Internet connection you'll need to forward port 3389 to the internal IP
address of the computer. If you have more then one computer, you can change
the port number and forward whatever ports you select to the appropriate
computers.
