Windows NetBIOS Messenger Service

XP PRO SP1

In MS AntiSpyware under
Real Time Protection,
Internet Agent Checkpoints,
Windows NetBIOS Messenger Service,
it says...
Most users who are not on a corporate nnetwork turn off
and disable Windows NetBIOS Messenger service.
IT CAN BE RE-ENABLED IN YOUR CONTROL PANEL SERVICE IF
NEEDED.

I told MS AntiSpyware to turn it off. BUT, I'd like to
know how to turn it back on. CONTROL PANEL SERVICE means
nothing to me.

Please advise.

Open Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Select "Messenger"
right click it > choose "Properties" > under the "General" (tab), choose in
"Startup type:" Automatic > OK. Right click "Messenger" again and click
"Start".

Thanks.
And anyone trying this note that you will not see Windows
NetBIOS Messenger Service, but only Messenger when in
Services.

It might be useful to discuss why you want this turned on. It is off by
default on XP SP2 machines.

I do keep it on, myself, but I'm interested in your reasons--there's so much
confusion between the various "messenger" entities.
