windows messenger won't start

Ever since I used the windows update option in the IE6
tool bar & updated acc., the Windows Messenger in XP Pro
refuses to start. I tried installing old & new versions
of msn messenger many a times, but still it refuses to
start.
Since then i have removed & uninstalled all the windows
update components i had installed & tried reinstalling
the messenger but without any sucess.

These are the windows update components still installed &
am not sure if they are creating any conflict with the
messenger & but am not sure tht. if i remove them then
the other progs. get harmed:

1.Internet Explorer Q818529
2.Intel(R) 82845G Graphics Driver Software
3.Intel(R) Pro Set 2
4.Outlook Express Update Q330994

I have looked through lots of posts and tried everything
including:

Updating to Directx drivers
Reinstalling Windows Messenger & MSN messenger
etc.

None of this has worked and I cannot use Messenger at
all. I am on a network connection (LAN)thru a server & am
behind a firewall. i am a novice user, could u pl. help
me out?

Hi there - try this to make sure messenger isn't
disabled. Failing that, install MSN Messenger 6.0.

Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc, and then press
ENTER.
Double-click the following items to expand them:
Local Computer Policy
Computer Configuration
Administrative Templates
Windows Components
Windows Messenger
Double-click Do not allow Windows Messenger to run, and
then click Disabled.
Click OK, and then quit the Group Policy snap-in.
NOTE: Group Policy Editor (Gpedit.msc) is not available on
Windows XP Home Edition-based computers.

Hope it works
