Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger 6.1

Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger 6.1 have the same icons and appear to
provide very similar functions. Can anyone tell me what the differences or
advantages/disadvantages are for one versus the other?

display pictures, custom emoticons, has a different interface, etc. whereas Windows Messenger
supports SIP-based communications services, Exchange IM Server, etc. Which one you use is up
to you, and a matter of personal choice (and based upon your needs and likes), however one
thing to keep in mind, Windows Messenger must still be installed on Windows XP in order for
MSN Messenger to retain full functionality (Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, Application
Sharing, etc.).

MSN Messenger is centered around MSN technologies (Hotmail, MSN Member Profiles, MSN Mobile,
etc.) whereas Windows Messenger is centered around Windows technologies (Exchange Server,
Office Live Communications Server, Windows Netmeeting, etc.).

Both clients however can make use of Microsoft technologies, like the .NET Messenger service,
..NET Passport and .NET Alerts.

MSN Explorer use Windows Messenger rather than MSN
Messenger? Just curious.

Hi Bob,

When MSN Explorer was released (the version that comes with Windows XP), Windows Messenger
was considered the "Messenger client" for Windows XP and hence why MSN Explorer uses it.
However, this has since changed, and the later versions of MSN Explorer for MSN Subscribers
(MSN 8/9) come with MSN Messenger (5/6).

Only Microsoft could manage to make things so confusing.

Since I have to have Windows Messenger anyway, I will just use it and
uninstall MSN Messenger 6.1.
