Windows Messenger Never Appears in System Tray -- Part 2

Jonathan (or anyone else)

I tried disabling MSN Explorer protection in Norton Anti-Virus, but that didn't help. I always have to run WM twice before its icon will appear in the system tray (either [1] once at startup, and then manually; or [2] once at startup and then by running Outlook Express, which links to WM).

To re-iterate, I don't recall having this problem before I upgraded to version 5.0

FYI, I have the following system setup

Windows XP Home Edition (SP1
Compaq Presario 5423U
Intel Pentium 4 @ 1.6 GH
512 MB RA
80 GB hard dis
nVidia GeForce 2 video car
SoundMax digital audio car
Intel PRO/100 VM Network Connection (cable modem @ 2.8 Mbps

Please help

Thank you.

Greetings Nils,

Just to be sure you turned off the wrong thing (sorry, I don't have a recent copy of NAV
installed at the moment), you want to turn off the MSN Messenger Instant Messaging scanning
in NAV, *not* MSN Explorer (not sure if there's a separate option for that or not).

Regardless, another thing to check is if you're using Messenger Plsu, that you have the
latest version (http://www.msgplus.net), if you don't have Plus installed, then that isn't
the issue.

No, you were right the first time -- I turned MSN Instant Messenger scanning off in NAV, but that didn't make any difference-- the Windows Messenger icon still doesn't appear in the system tray until I run it again after startup, even though it IS running at startup (double, triple-checked it in Task Manager and MSCONFIG). It doesn't matter if I open it in full-screen mode at startup or run it in the background. With the option to run it at startup checked (enabled) in the Preferences tab of Windows Messenger, I tried putting a copy of a shortcut to Windows Messenger in my Startup folder; same results. I even tried putting two, three or more copies of the shortcut in my Startup folder; the icon still refuses to appear in the system tray until I run WM or Outlook Express AFTER startup. The icon is always alive and well in the "Past Items" section of "Customize Notifications". I even tried removing the "Past Items" list in the registry, but after Windows Messenger is manually run once during a session (and the icon thus appears in the "Current Items" section), upon the next
startup it always jumps into the "Past Items" section

I give up..

Hi Nils,

Before you completely give up, I have one more thing for you to try.

Make sure the Windows Messenger process isn't run in the Task Manager (if it is, shut it
down), then start the registry editor by clicking Start, then Run, type "regedit" and then
click OK. Navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService key (they
look like folders), click the MessengerService key, then choose the Edit menu, and then
choose Delete.

Now start Windows Messenger from the start menu, make sure the proper startup settings are
set in the Tools, Preferences window, then reboot (or just log off Windows and back in), and
see if Windows Messenger shows up properly.

Chris B.

Hello!

I have the same problem. I have installed Windows Messenger 5 and MSN
Messenger 6.2, together. If I deinstall MSN Messenger 6.2, the Icon
appears, again. But I would like to use the Windows Messenger for work
and the MSN Messenger for friends. The problem do not exists with
Windows Messenger 4.7, but with 5.

regards,
Chris
