I have Windows Media Player v.8. Is there a later version, and should I
install it or stick with the one I have?

Media Player. Estetically is identical to version 6.4 and has the same
lightness in terms of ram occupation, but it has much more useful functions.

one single frame. With ctrl + right/left it's possible to skip one
predefinite quantity of frames. With ctrl + up it's possible to change

player Quicktime and RealMedia movies (but that programs must be installed).

Frank,
That depends on whether or not you mind having mandatory digital
rights managment (drm) on your computer. That started with v.9.

What is drm? It sounds intrusive.

My wife's Win98SE came with WMP9 installed. It's bigger and fancier
with funky designs that change to the music. I'm happy with my 6.4
but WMP9 seems quite solid.

Info sent out can be easily curtailed. As I just noted in another
thread, go to the Privacy tab and make sure you un-check all the
relevant check-boxes.
Click Apply and then click OK.
Close the WMP9 and then open it again.

You can read about it here:

http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/D/DRM.html

I've heard that if you play a non-DRM marked media file (not sure
which format, but probably .mp3) in WMP9, it will from that point be
marked with DRM. This may mean that certain players won't be able to
access the file.

Perhaps somebody else can provide better info. Sorry.

I strongly doubt that at this point in time. There haven't been any
mentions on any of the websites I normally frequent.

Consider. You have a band and record a session. This is *your* music,
no one elses. For M$ to change this file *without* your permission,
adding limits to what can be done with it, puts Media Player (as far
as I'm concerned) in the category of being a Trojan. They will have
decided how you may distribute it and to whom.

Don't worry. There's enough s**t coming down the pike from M$ to
satisfy any feelings of paranoia you (or I) may have.

Here's an interesting one you may like (I'm still looking for official
confirmation):

Coworker has XP, service pack 2 beta and media player 10 beta.
Said he got some Cds and media player was banging his firewall to get atho
to
play that BB cd. Got error messages, now beta 10 will play nothing.
He turned it over to the Company IT department. He is not the type of guy
that rips songs. To say he is pissed is an understatment.
