Windows ME and spyware

Can anyone help? Have just spent several hours
downloading the Microsoft Spyware Beta followed by had to
upgrade Internet Explorer only to discover that this
software is not compatible with Windows ME. I'm not a
computer buff and wondered if there are any other free
eqivalent Microsoft spyware downloads. My searches on the
microsoft site are leaving me incredibly frustrated as
everything assumes everyone has XP by now.

Thanks

If you have read the system requirements before downloading, you could
avoid this disappointment..

Antispyware for Windows 9x/Me
----------------------------------

IE-SPYAD is a preventative measure like SpywareBlaster. It adds several
hundred sites to your restricted zone.

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

You have to check this page every week or every month for a new updated
list. Latest is June 16. IE-SPYAD works on IE 4 and higher up to IE 6 SP1.

Consider also using a hosts file. Two good sources are here. Each of these
was last updated 6-25-05.

Mvps.org

Bluetack
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=7

And here are three good hosts file utilities. You can install all of them,
just use only one at a time. Close one before opening another, etc.

HostsMan

Hosts Manager 1.4

Power Tweaks for IE 5 (one of the IE 5 Web Accessories) works fine on IE 6.
It adds two options to the Tools menu in Internet Explorer: Add to Trusted
Zone, Add to Restricted Zone.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/previous/webaccess/pwrtwks.mspx

And here is a tool that plugs many exploits in Internet Explorer. It is
called BugOff. Read the warnings before disabling each exploit. You can
enable/disable exploits with one click.

X-Cleaner Freeware
http://www.xblock.com/download-freeware.php

Just don't download the EXE version of X-Cleaner that has the installer.
Ad-Watch flagged it as having "Virtual Bouncer" malware, which may be a
false positive since X-Cleaner is an antispyware program. Just to be safe,
download the EXE version without an installer. It does not get flagged.

Don't forget about antitrojan software. a2 is a free one that is compatible
with Win98/Me. It also comes in a paid version that offers
real-timeprotection. If you can afford $50, you should get TrojanHunter or
TDS-3. They provide far better real-time protection and better detection &
removal capabilities. When you upgrade to XP, you can also consider Ewido.
It is available in both a free and a paid version.

Consider PeerGuardian 2.0 as a firewall supplement. There are versions for
Win9x/Me and versions for 2000/XP. PeerGuardian is not just for people who
use file-sharing P2P programs. It's good protection for everyone and
supplements ZoneAlarm firewall really well. (If you do use file-sharing
programs, please stop using them. They are just too risky.)
