Windows Mail

Like loads of others, I have messages stuck in my Outbox and I cant send any
messages. I have downloaded the Microsoft Support Centre bugfix. This lets me
delete the messages stuck in my Outbox but I still can't send any messages.
Please help. Thanks a lot. Max

What happens when you try to send?
If there is an error message, right-click on it, copy, then paste it
into a reply here.

What happens is that the email sits in my Outbox until I shut down Windows
Mail and then reopen it. At that point, Windows Mail condescends to send the
email -- which then often takes hours (and I do mean hours) to be delivered
to the intended recipient. I thought the problem might be with the Norton
Protection outgoing email scan but turning that off seems to make no
diference. I'm stumped. If you can think of a solution, I'd be really
grateful! Thanks -- Max

Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a computer
that is running Windows Vista

Your Norton antivirus is the problem. Disabling it is insufficient,
it needs to be uninstalled. Let us know how Windows Mail works
after uninstalling all Norton apps and then rebooting.

At your convenience, download and install a more compatible
antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

Thanks very much for this. My problem is slightly different though (I had
already downloaded the patch you mentioned, thank you very much.) I can
delete the message in the Outbox if I want. What I can't do, though, is send
the message immediately (no matter what options I choose.) I have to shut
down Windows Mail and then restart it, at which point Windows Mail will send
the message in the Outbox. However, if someone sends me a message, I get it
immediately. How do I get Windows Mail to send a message immediately (and
without having to close it down every time)? If you have any thoughts, I'd be
really grateful. I'm going nuts here (I used to be able to set up Outlook
Express in 10 minutes tops and Windows Mail is taking days!) Regards -- Max

Dear Gary -- Thanks for this. I've uninstalled the Norton AV as you suggested
and installed the free Grisoft /AVG AV software that works fine on my other
PCs/ laptop and mates said worked ok on Vista. (I should say though that all
of my other machines run Windows XP!) However, the problem remains the same
on this new Vista laptop: Windows Mail will only send email if I shut it down
and then restart it. Then it will send the messages in the Outbox

Following on from my earlier post today, I should add that I have tried
setting up an email account via Outlook. This works better except that
Outlook will not retain the password even though I have chosen to save it.
Is this another beauty of Windows Vista, do you know? Sorry to bother you
with all this but as you can probably tell I'm at my wits end here. Regards

You must be using Outlook 2002. The password problem is a known bug with
that program.
Outlook 2003 & newer work fine.

AVG 7.5 and later works fine on Vista, except that it must be installed
with the custom install option whereby you tell it not to install the mail
checking module. Turning AVG's mail checking off afterwards does not
seem to work. It is for this reason that I recommend Avast rather than AVG.
If you want to keep AVG, uninstall, and reinstall with that custom option.

For whatever reason, Windows Mail seems to be more sensitive to
corruption from antivirus email checking than its OE predecessor,
although over the years I have heard plenty of warnings not to use OE
with McAfee or Norton antivirus products.

After you reinstall AVG, and if the problem persists, delete that email
account, restart Windows Mail, then re-create the account. Sometimes
email accounts get corrupted for no apparent reason.

It wasn't clear from your description below whether you uninstalled
AVG and reinstalled it without the mail scanning module.
Just turning off scanning in AVG does not appear to be sufficient.

Assuming you followed the AVG uninstall/reinstall method I advised,
your remaining options are more drastic. My best guess is that
some critical Windows Mail files are corrupted.

You can try "How to Reset Windows Mail" about halfway down the
page at http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/62560-windows-mail-problems.html
That method removes and regenerates data-related structures.

If that did not resolve the problem, you can try a repair install of Vista:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html
This will replace system files, but is not supposed to affect data.

Another option is to abandon Windows Mail and switch to Windows
Live Mail. It will automatically import your WM accounts, settings, folders
and emails.

antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

Like loads of others, I have messages stuck in my Outbox and I cant send any
messages. I have downloaded the Microsoft Support Centre bugfix. This lets me
delete the messages stuck in my Outbox but I still can't send any messages.
Please help. Thanks a lot. Max

Thanks so much for all this. You've been great.

One last thing: might be worth downloading say Thunderbird and using that
instead of Windows Mail (assuming I can incorporate my old Outlook address
book / contacts in it) or does that raise similar -- or even worse problems
do you think?

Live Mail. It will automatically import your WM accounts, settings, folders
and emails.

Dear Gary -- I'm really grateful for all your help but I'm afraid the problem

avail. I've repeated the process on three separate occasions and still OM
will only work if I shut it down after pressing Send and Receive. I'm
embarrassed to ask this but do you have any other ideas? Regards -- Max

Then it will send the messages in the Outbox
immediately. By contrast, if anyone sends me a message I do get it
immediately now. Are my mates wrong and is AVG is AV programme that doesn't
work on Vista? (How come Outlook Express was so straightward in this respect
I wonder?) If you had a second to let me know any further thoughts, I'd be
really grateful Thanks a lot -- Max

Your Norton antivirus is the problem. Disabling it is insufficient,
it needs to be uninstalled. Let us know how Windows Mail works
after uninstalling all Norton apps and then rebooting.

Last time I checked, Thunderbird did not import anything from
Windows Mail. I understand that there are some third party add-ons
that may help with that, but I have no experience using those.
Also, I have never tried importing into Thunderbird from other
sources.

This is what makes Windows Live Mail attractive (as far as just
trying it out), it automatically imports everything from Windows Mail.

Thanks very much for this. My problem is slightly different though (I had
already downloaded the patch you mentioned, thank you very much.) I can
delete the message in the Outbox if I want. What I can't do, though, is
send
the message immediately (no matter what options I choose.) I have to shut
down Windows Mail and then restart it, at which point Windows Mail will
send

without having to close it down every time)? If you have any thoughts, I'd

Express in 10 minutes tops and Windows Mail is taking days!) Regards --
