I have been using Windows Mail on Vista for over a year. Suddenly, I get the
following prompts:

Account: 'incoming.verizon.net', Server: 'incoming.verizon.net', Protocol:
POP3, Server Response: '-ERR [AUTH] Authentication failed', Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

and

Account: 'incoming.verizon.net', Server: 'incoming.verizon.net', Protocol:
POP3, Server Response: '-ERR invalid command', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC91

Please explain how to fix this.

Go to Tools, Accounts, select he Verizon account, Properties,
Servers, make sure that the option "Log on using Secure Password
Authentication" is not checked.

If that was not the issue, which antivirus are you using?

Thanks Gary, but Secure Password Authentication is not checked

I am using Avast based on the reviews I found on this help section.

I also just found out that Avast automatically downloaded an update
yesterday. I tried to restore my computer to settings from 2 days ago, but
that did not help either.

When you installed Avast, did you use the default install, or did
you choose custom install? If the former, uninstall Avast, then
reinstall using the custom option. This will give you an option to
forego installing the mail checking module.
Once this is done, delete that mail account, restart Windows Mail,
then recreate that account. It may have become corrupted.

I use Avast and its updates have not interfered with my Windows Mail.
