Windows Mail/Vista Inbox disappeared yesterday!

Out of nowhere, my entire inbox disappeared yesterday while I wasn't even
sitting at the computer; I happened to return to find the emails going away.
I updated my AVG Virus Protection and ran a full scan, to no avail. When I
open the mailbox now, the other folders are intack (thankfully!) but when I
close Mail and reopen it, the newest email also goes away (it's not in
deleted nor in junk mail, I checked).

I am able to read them via webmail with no problems, but I prefer to use the
Windows Mail version.

Does anyone know what is happending and what I need to do to fix it? I
haven't called Roadrunner as my experience is they really don't know and
could lead me in the wrong direction.

Did you use the standard install for AVG? If so, it sometimes helps to
uninstall
it, then do a custom install where you tell it to leave out the parts that
scan email.

There's a possibility that these messages are only hidden. To check for
this,
click on whichever folder is likely to contain them, then View, then Current
View, then Show All Messages.

Thank you Robert for your fast reply......but wouldn't I want it to scan the
emails?

I just re-read my initial post and I misrepresented what is happening.....I
can only read new messages on webmail, not the missing or old ones.

What has happened and why? How would I know what folder to look in? Sorry,
I have some basic knowledge, hubby has more and son is the computer guru of
all times, but he lives 90 minutes away.

Any suggestions? Other than take a drive 90 miles North? LOL

Email scanning is more likely to cause problems than prevent them.

http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

Once you download mail, it's usually deleted from the server and
therefore not available for webmail. If you want to change this,
start Windows Mail, then click on Tools, then Accounts, then your
email account, then Properties, then Advanced. If there is no
checkmark in the box before Leave a copy of messages on
server, click on this box, then Apply. It's a good idea to also
select one of the options for when to remove the messages from
the server, to prevent it from having so many messages for you
that it refuses to accept any more, and then click Apply. Click on
OK, then Close.

The Inbox seems to be the most likely folder, but you may have
to try all the folders under the Local Folders group. If any of
these folders has Hide Read Messages set, then when you open
that folder, any messages you read in a previous session in that
folder will be hidden.

Many email providers will occasionally delete the oldest mail from
their servers, so it's a good idea to create at least one folder
under Local Folders and move your older messages there. However
this will prevent you from seeing them by webmail.

Some internet companies put their better people to work on
writing help files, not to answering the phone. Look here if
you want information on whether Roadrunner is likely to be
one of them:

Thank you for the webmail info, but it is fine the way I have it set up; I
was only trying to clarify that my new messages are arriving and stay put if
it read on webmail; however, if I open Windows Mail/Vista again, they show up
and then go "poof!"

I contacted Roadrunner; no help as usual. They told me to delete my account
and create a new one. Then I told the supoort guy that I have 2 email
accounts and they were both affected simultaneously, so I doubted it was as
he said a "corrupt" account problem. Glad I didn't take his initial advice!
He told me to contact Microsoft. Guess that's my next nickle. Or maybe HP
tech support. I got this computer only about a month ago and never had a
problem like this before ;(

Are you able to read them when they show up? do they disappear after you've
read them?
Perhaps the View setting for that folder is set to "Hide read messages".

YOU ARE MY HERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is exactly what was set (how
that happened when I was away from the computer, I will NEVER know!!!!!!!!!)
But it said to delete all read and ignored messages, which was basically
everything........so I changed the setting back to "show all messages" and
everything is back :))))))))))))
THANK YOU
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much!

Do the new messages in Windows Mail go 'poof' after you read
them or before you read them? After a given message disappears
from Windows Mail, can you then still access that message in webmail?

Dave:
Yes, he did indeed! Only, I didn't understand his explanation as well as
yours......I had asked how I would know which folder to chek (i mave many
many folders LOL) and I guess he gave up on me! LOL

Gary:
Thanks.......2 messages earlier, it shows where the problem has been
resolved, but since you were kind enough to step up here, I'll answer your
questions as best I can.
Windos Messages went poof when I closed the window (someone view setting had
been changed to "hide read and ignored messages" which is basically
everything! SO I changed it back and all 300+ messages returned :)
When they were hidden, I could not read those same messages on webmail, but
could read all new incoming messages on webmail and those would stay there
unless I manually deleted them.
Thanks again for your time!

That view setting can be applied to each folder.
In Windows Mail it's easy to click on the pull-down box on the Toolbar and
change it.
In the Windows Live Mail, it's more difficult to do.

I got in on this thread a bit late, primarily because it sounded like
you had tried Robert's suggestions but they didn't work for you.
Good to hear the issue has been resolved.
