windows mail settings, etc. questions

Any help with the following questions would be greatly appreciated.

1) How do I 'globally' turn off the watch thing for my posted newsgroup
messages in Windows Mail so that the glasses don't show in the Watch /
Ignore column for every one of the messages I have posted? I normally 'group
messages by conversation' and not only my messages but also replies by
others to my messages are marked this way and I don't want this.

2) I view messages in the preview pane and unlike OE6, whenever I click on a
newsgroup, Windows Mail opens a message. How can I stop it from doing this?
It is very annoying. I want to decide what messages I open and not have
WinMail do that.

3) This question has probably been asked, but does anyone know if we will be
forced to replace Windows Mail in Vista with Windows Mail Live at some
point? Also what about OE6 in XP? I'm currently testing the WMLD beta on XP
SP2 on this dual boot Vista/XP PC and so far for what I use it for (advanced
OE stationery) WMLD beta is a disaster.

Thanks,
Richard

Hi Richard:

#1. WinMail Tools/Options/Advanced and you'll find the box.

#2. Not at this time and it's very annoying. We've discussed with the mail
team and asked fixing this, but they say there was a reason for doing it
that way, but they can't remember what it was. In any case, what most of us
do is disable the Preview Pane before switching newsgroups (add a button to
the Toolbar to do so).

#3. Installing Windows Live Mail will set it as the default mail and news
client and the icons and shortcuts for Windows Mail will not work until you
go to the Control Panel, Default Programs applet, and change it back in
there.

Good luck.

Hi Jim, and thanks much for your reply. I tried what you suggested for #1
and unchecked the "Mark message threads I started as 'Watched'" box under
Tools/Options/Advanced and that still didn't work. It only would work if I
then reset the newsgroup and downloaded the headers again. This seems like a
bug to me.

Okay, you think likewise about #2. I tried what you suggested and it works
but it's still annoying to have to go through extra steps when that hasn't
ever been necessary with OE. I hope they fix this soon.

Regarding #3, I already made OE the default mail and news client again on my
XP boot drive so that's not a problem. My question was: will everyone be
forced to use WML when it goes gold? Will it be a critical update that will
do away with WinMail in Vista and OE in XP? I hope not. Obviously the WML
beta does not do that with OE.

Regards,
Richard

So do I, but only time will tell.

The method of distribution has not been decided as yet. WinMail in Vista
and OE in XP will still be available on those systems after installing
WinLiveMail although on a Vista system, the WinMail files and icons appear
to be hidden by the install until the default mail/news client is reset
using the Control Panel applet for Default Programs. Don't know who or why
anyone on the team thought this to be a needed feature but they did and it
is. I don't have an XP box handy to check how it performs but it may be
similar. In any case, it appears to be just another fluke of the great
"Redmond-think" that not all (or even a majority) may think correct or
appropriate. They have "suggested" that the HTML features "may" be restored
in some later version. We'll just have to wait and see.

Thanks for the info Jim. Hopefully in WLM they will fix the HTML features
that "may" be restored in some later version as you mentioned.

With the WLM beta on XP, embedded EOTs and embedded flash no longer works in
stationery. Even embedded midis don't play. The EOTs and SWFs can still be
embedded but they don't display in WLM, only in OE or Winmail.

One problem that I ran into: I embedded an EOT in a stationery post. I do
this using a program I wrote and do the embedding in a folder on my hard
drive and not in OE or WinMail. The EOT/SWF is embedded in a BGSOUND tag and
the EOT/SWF is displayed in the stationery with a script. Anyway, I had made
OE the default email/news client. Now when I open the .nws file after the
embedding to send it to the outbox, it will only open as a WLM message and
will only go to the WLM outbox despite making OE the default email/news
client. I did post it from WLM and it displays fine on our newsgroup in OE
but not in WLM.

Thanks for the info and nice to see you're still using Stationery. I think
it was you who made a rather breathtaking presentation in one of the
stationery groups years ago with Direct Animation, but that was a lot of
years ago. The eot files can still work in stationery in Windows Mail and
Steve Cochran has demonstrated that. Maybe he'll pop in an post a
demonstration of "how to" that will help. I've not seen it in WLM however
and have not tested it. Wish there were a better answer.

Best regards.

Thanks Jim. I don't remember the stationery. Might have been an evolve DA
script that I used. It's a shame that the DA Control no longer works since
installing IE7.

Actually Steve Cochran did post an example of his method of embedding EOTs
in WinMail some weeks ago in a reply to me:
....or maybe this link will work for you:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/[email protected]
....and his EOT displayed fine in both OE and WinMail.

I just viewed his reply in WLM and the EOT does not display, same as the
ones I embedded with my program (in WLM only). Oh well, at least the ones I
embed with the program still work fine in both OE and WinMail as they always
have. Hopefully MS will not do anything to change that and hopefully MS will
fix WLM for stationery by making the BGSOUND tag work. Of course making the
edit/source/preview tabs available in WLM would be nice too.

Richard
