Windows Mail problem identification - at least for me

I just upgraded to Vista a couple weeks ago and everything was working
beautifully until I tried to send an e-mail to a fairly large group of
people. I struggled with it for a week, systematically going through
everything I thought could be a problem, and then I came here looking for
help.

I've read a lot of the Windows Mail posts and, so far, don't see a solution.
The closest thing was, "Uninstall MacAfee or Norton as they interfere with
the program." Some people who did that seemed to be having success.

Not having either of those programs, I deleted the virus program I do have.
Trend Micro PC-cillin. It's one of the best out there. Less invasive, less
proprietary, constantly updating itself in the background with little loss of
performance. But, I thought if the others were causing problems, Trend might
also be inhibiting my mail from going out.

Nope. Still having the same problem. The error I was getting was :

"The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider."

That was a lotta help.

Then I noticed something in the next para of the error message (that I
hadn't read because I was so disgusted with the first part); ONE OF THE
ADDRESSES WOULDN'T RECEIVE!! With OE6, it would still send the mail out and
you'd get notices of the ones that weren't receiving... but with Windows
Mail, it seemed to have blocked the mail from going to everyone because of
one failed address.

I wondered if it could really be that simple and deleted that one address.
The e-mail zipped outta there like a rocket!!

I'm feeling pretty blonde for not figuring it out right away.

This may not be the same thing that's holding everyone else up, but I wanted
to share it since it was an easy fix and worked for me. Hope it works that
well for at least a few more of you!

I'm going back to reinstall Trend Micro now. It seems that's one of the few
high end virus programs that works well with Vista.

Good luck!!

Thanks for sharing. Yes, Trend Micro antivirus is good.
Next time, ask for help earlier.

Thanks.

I had done that, but when I create mail and call up contacts it's
always sorted on Name again and the fields First & Last Name aren't
available in that view.

I am glad to hear it's not my anti virus that's causing the problem as I use
Trend Micro also. I have not been able to send messages using WM and I am
now getting a dial up pop up that I can't seem to get rid of. I am using a
Broadband Satellite connection through Dish Network called Wild Blue. Have
you heard of any problems before between WM and this ISP?

You don't give the exact error message, but if it's the error I think it is
OE would not have sent any of them either.

What is the complete error message?

G

Go to either Internet Explorer/Tools/Internet Options or Control Panel/Internet Options.
Click on the Connections tab. Make sure "Never dial a connection" is
ticked. In fact, it should be grayed out, indicating that Vista recognizes
that an Internet connection via the LAN is present.
In Windows Mail, go to Tools, Accounts, select the account, Properties,
Connection tab, and make sure the settings there are grayed out, indicating
that IE's settings will be used.

Are you getting an error message when you try to send? If so, copy it
and paste into a reply here.
