Windows Mail "not fit for purpose"

As recommended by the experts I uninstalled Norton, removed my email account,
closed and reopened WM, and then added my account back again. Also
ticked/unticked all the Options boxes as others recommended. Still no
resolution of problem that after a composed message is in the Outbox, Send
Messages Immediately does nothing, and neither does manually toggling the
Send/Receive button. WM also does not dynamically update the in-parenthesis
message numbers suffixed after the folders, and the same non-functionality
applies when trying to reorganize folders. One has to close/reopen WM for
these cosmetic updates to happen. Now also experiencing probs with attaching
some files, which do not, but have yet to experiment fully to understand this
behaviour. I have concluded that Vista WM is bug-infested and flea-ridden.
I am appalled that Microsoft release and flog software that is patently "not
fit for purpose".

Well, I'm sorry that Windows Mail is not working for you, but it has been
working flawlessly for me since I installed Vista on 2/2/2007. With McAfee
Security Suite, with email scanning. I also use Thunderbird and Windows
Live Mail without problems.

As far as attaching files, Windows Mail won't let you -- if that file
happens to be open in another program (like Word).

Not sure if I asked you this before, but are you running any other
type of third party security software, like anti-spyware?

In a few rare instances, Windows Mail system files get damaged,
and about the only way to fix that is via a Vista repair-install:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

There are some indications that MS might abandon WM, and will
urge all users to switch to Windows Live Mail (WLM). Like most of the
other responders here, I have been running WLM for many months,
and consider it to be superior to WM. So you might as well get
ahead of the curve:

Hi guys, Yup, Norton was a clean uninstall. Symptoms as described unchanged
even before installing (recommended) Avast, which now is running with emails
scanning disabled. Will now try latest suggestions. Glad to hear that it
can work "flawlessly" for someone, and I look forward to getting to that
happy state....sometime....maybe......

It sounds like one of your security programs is over-protecting the Registry
and preventing the Registry changes needed for those settings to change.
Try booting into Safe Mode and making the changes.

I am inserting this message here to save readers spending time on the other
replies which suggested useful possible solutions but did not fix the
problem. Mine was a new laptop which came with a pre-installed SMS
application. Contacting the manufacturer's Helpdesk got me uninstalling this
software which sometimes conflicts with WM. Magic! WM now behaves as it
should. My unreserved apologies to Microsoft, and once again thanks to those
whose tried to help me.

Xander, it is not necessary to post this story multiple times.
I can assure you that very few users have an SMS app that
integrates with Windows Mail.
