"The application was unable to initializ"

What if any antivirus programs do you have? Some of them tend to cause
assorted problems in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately.

I get the SAME message as you do. I do not have McFee or Norton and I still
can't get an e-mail out

Do you have a recent version of the Trend antivirus program, which also
causes assorted problems in Windows Mail?

Do you have the Google Toolbar program installed, which also causes
such problems?

Do you have a program with SMS in its name installed? If so, tell us its
full name, since some of them cause problems in Windows Mail.

What if any antivirus programs, antispyware programs, firewall programs,
and other security programs do you have installed?

Click on your error message and copy the entire message to your next
message, in case there's some detail we need in order to offer much
help.

It would be helpful if you posted which antivirus you DO have.
Any other third party security software like anti-spyware?

Windows Mail is not good at reporting errors caused by interference from
antivirus programs. They are often reported as not having enough memory.
What if any antivirus programs do you have, and have you ever had a
Norton or McAfee antivirus program on that computer?

Gateway and other computer sellers include a trial copy of
McAfee or Norton AV because the AV vendor pays (bribes)
them to do so. The incompatibility problem is not widely known

I have the same message, problem as bgjon, but after the first sentence, it
reads "initialize junk filtering." When I cancel out that dialogue box,
there's on more box, which reads "Windows Mail could not be started because
MDOE.DLL could not be initiated."

Also, I have McAfee Virus. Why the heck did they put it in my Gateway Laptop
that I bought six months ago with Vista if Windows Mail it isn't compatible
with McAfee!?!? They put in a program that they knew didn't work with the
mail program that comes with the system?!?!

Are you running McAfee or Norton antivirus? Those will need to be
uninstalled because they are incompatible with Windows Mail.

I just started having the same problem 3 days ago . I've had Norton for over a year and Windows Mail has always opened with no issues so I don't think it is related . This just happened out of the blue . I also have tons of memory left and already have junk mail filtering . None of the posts I've looked at have a solution . Anyone know how to fix the problem?

The posts you quoted DID have the solution: Uninstall Norton.
Then follow up with their debris removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

If you are not willing to accept the advice of the experts here, then you will
have to come up with your own solution.

The uninstall program for McAfee often fails to remove the parts of the
program which cause problems in Windows Mail. Download and run
this cleanup program:

<http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105&partner=McAfee&type=TS&ia=1>

You may even need to remove your email account under Windows
Mail, then restart Windows Mail and add the account again.

If this cures your problem, but leaves you with no antivirus program
installed, you may want one that doesn't cause problems in Windows
Mail. Most versions of the Norton antivirus program and a recent
version of the Trend antivirus program are bad choices; they also
cause problems in Windows Mail. I recommend either avast! or AVG,
either one with a custom install where you tell it to leave out the parts
that scan email.

Hi i am also getting the same problem i have Windows Vista Home Premium and use "Trend Micro Internet Security 2008" for security and it is certified for vista and still i have that problem with "WinMail.exe" cant run.

Gary VanderMolen

Trend Micro antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Sometimes it takes a while before symptoms start showing up.
The only way you can prove or disprove that your antivirus is the culprit is to
uninstall it.

If you decide to replace your antivirus, we can recommend some free ones
that are more compatible with Windows Mail:

Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of aggressive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in the antivirus,
for the reason explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

Hi Gary

I have just had the same problem with windows mail and am running Threatfire
- is this incompatible too? What do I need to do to get Windows Mail back up
and running?

Thanks - getting very frustrated!!
Alison

Gary VanderMolen

I am not familiar with the Threatfire antivirus, so I don't know how
compatible it is. As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must
be turned off, although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
If no improvement, consider doing a test uninstall of your antivirus, to see
if that cures the problem.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve the problem,
then as an alternative to uninstalling the antivirus consider upgrading to
Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to suffering bad effects from
overly aggressive antivirus programs: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

Thanks

Will give that a go

Thanks Gary

The uninstall of ThreatFire didn't do the trick so have upgraded to Windows
Live Mail and all seems hunky dorey.

Thanks again
