Windows mail appears to have decided not to display images - help

My copy of windows mail appears to have decided to stop displaying images in
received mails.

Tools/Options?Security/Download Images - block imagesand other external
content
remains unchecked.

Worked fine until the last few days. I have Vista set to automatically
update. It appears to break itself on a regular basis (it currently reports
about 170 problems and no working solutions - they all seem to occur after an
update - is it safe to just switch this off - in the hope that Vista will
"settle" ???? ).

Anyone got any idea how to get it to revert to bahaving as previously ?

Or should I just give up on it ?

Is it possible to "backgrade" to XP ??????

Cheers All

You need to examine what programs are installed and running at startup.
Many antivirus programs (e.g. Norton, McAfee) cause more trouble to Vista
than they help. This is especially true with WinMail. See section 3 here:

I have never had Windows Mail fail after an update. Chances are, your
troubles are due to running in antivirus that is not compatible with Windows Mail.
Which antivirus is it?

Hi Steve / Gary
thanks for your thoughts - guess I was getting pretty frustrated when I
wrote my original post - far too much of my computing control has been taken
away from me and is 'automatic' these days :)

OK on thoughts about 3rd party antivirus etc - I run AVG (the purchased
'full' version). Whilst I have never had any serious problem with it in the
- what 7 ? 8 ? years I have relied on it - I suppose I cannot discount the
possibility that it was at fault.

I say WAS - because this morning windows mail is displaying images in html
mail again... (it never 'FAILED' per se Gary - it simply acted as if I had
set the security to block images) . . .

Both vista and AVG carried out automatic updates overnight - and vista
rebooted my system in the process - so I guess I might never know 'who was to
blame' ... until and if it happens again.

Thanks again for you consideration of this issue - "Global Community Assist"
- (just made that up...) has to be one of the GREAT things about the intenet
¿huh?

Cheers to all from the very chilly Scottish Borders

The general proviso that we offer here regarding AVG, is that it is
installed originally via the 'Custom' install option when presented.

At that point one can decide not to install any features that potentially
interfere with WM, mail scan and (quite possibly, with the pro version, (I
have always used the free version)), other tools such as spam filtering?

The general shield protects you, mail scanning is purely cosmetic.

We recommend uninstall, reinstall as above YMMV?

Thanks Mac - I'll have a look at this - I do have some fine tuning to do in
the wonderfull world of network sharing permissions - or at least firewalls
that don't want to co-operate . . . so it might come to that...

Cheers

Stuart

p.s. I never had any problems with the free version either :)

You're very welcome. Thanks for your feedback.
Ditto on the suggestion to do a custom install of AVG. It may well
prevent future problems with Windows Mail.

You might also disable AVG whenever you install updates, as I've found it
may corrupt the installations of them.
