I've installed Windows Live Messenger v8.0.0.689.00_Branches on Windows Vista
Beta 2 v5384.

I have followed the steps to disable UAP (UAC).
Added MSNMngr, msvs, msncall to be allowed by the Windows Vista Firewall.

I cannot sign on to Windows Live Messenger. On Signing in to Vista i get
Error code 81000306.

I did a connection test and i can connect to the Windows Live Messenger
servers in Tools \ Options \ Connection \ Advanced \ TCP Test.

Here is error log :

Hmm... I've had no problems whatsoever with Beta 2 Vista and Messenger - I'm
running the latest internal build at the moment and it's signing in
absolutely fine... I've just installed .689 again from the public site and
it's still working.

However, try this site:
http://www.imzers.com/msn/solve/error-code-81000306

If the worst comes to the worst and you really want to sign into Messenger
regardless of what client you use, try the MSN Web Messenger (soon to be
revamped).
http://webmessenger.msn.com

Really hope this helps )

error that is not in the error list. it just says signing in and comes up
with an error number that is not in any error list.

Windows Live Messenger 8.00.689.00 Beta causes a DEP (Data Execution
Prevention) Error on my Windows Vista Beta 2 Computer, Just FYI, especially
you Zack.

Hi there, I get exactly the same error as you Coakeyoakey. I've tried
installed both Live Messenger and the lastest version of MSN Messenger, both
come up with the same result.

I've also tried installing both after a fresh install Vista Beta 2, and
still no luck, also tried exactly what you have tried as well as disabling
Windows Firewall, and still no luck. Pretty much, everything else you've
tried, I've also tried, and it's all no go...

As for the imzers.com site, it doesn't resolve the issue either. It is
clearly a Vista and Messenger (Or Live Messenger) related issue.

I found the solution, it needs Microsoft .Net 1.1 (which is identified as
incompatible with Vista to run). I was testing and installed .Net 1.1 and
the update anyway and both Messenger 7.5 and Windows Live 8.0 beta worked
flawlessly.

Thanks mate, I'm going to try your solution *fingers crossed* haha. I'll let
you know if it does not work for me (or if it does).

Again, thanks a lot!

Hmm... It still does work. I installed both .Net Framework 1.1 and .Net
Framework 1.1 SP1 and the hotfix, still coming up with the same error. This
is driving me nuts haha

That is strange. I uninstalled .Net 1.1 and MSN Messenger failed to
start... the two little fella's just kept rotating around each other, I just
re-installed it and messenger works again.

Odd.

In the interim, use windows web messenger http://webmessenger.msn.com/ it
looks functionally the same, and should suffice until Microsoft fixes this
issue.

Maybe .Net 1.1 is only one of a number of add-ons that is required by
Messenger, and you are missing another unknown one?

Hello, I am having the same problem, 81000306 error.
I have tried all suggestions listed here and still nada.
here is what i have tried
Disabled Firewall, installed .net 1.1 plus SP1, Checked Time and Date
correct, Disabled UAC, Reinstalled WLM.

Running on a Domain.

Any clues??

Haha, I'm glad you at least know what is up with your system. I might also
try to install .NET Framework 2.0 later as well although I highly doubt it'll
fix the issue. Thanks for your suggestion though.http://www.neowin.net/

I wonder if it's the way my network is set up maybe? But then again
everything else internet related works but MSN Messenger or Messenger Live.
I've got a Netgear DG824 modem and router, computers are connected via
ethernet.

After doing mutiple searches on google and stuff, it seems that there are
quite a few people who have the same problem, but no known universal
solution. I've just lodged a report to Microsoft, hopefully they'll be able
to do something about it soon.

G

Yanman, I have the same router and the same problem. If you get a solution,
could you post it up please.

THanks

Ives

just a note, im also having the problem with a dg834 router, perhaps vista is
incompatable with the routers (i know there are xp64-bit problems with
netgear)

G

Guest

Ashna it must be a problem with the router. I'm using a Netgear DG834G and
have tried on my friends DG834 and it doenst work either with Vista.

G

Guest

So in the end, it is quite possible that it is a Netgear router issue? I
checked the Netgear site a day ago, nothing mentioned about Vista, unless I
missed it.

G

Guest

You are right. It's the router that is the problem. As of yet, I don't think
any one knows how to fix this problem... apart from to get a new router or
wait for Microsoft to do something about it (which I doubt they ever will)!

Sorry for the discouragement guys! But hopefully this had made it clear.

Someone had updated their router firmware and claimed that it worked. I still
haven't tried the firmware because a while ago I saw it was published in
October of last year, but who knows, it might work, I'm trying it now.

G

Guest

Well, that suprised me! Updating my firmware on the DG834 worked! I suggest
you all to try it.

G

Guest

Ahhhh, Now we are getting somewhere! I too have a DG834G!!! Interesting! I am
getting Web page stuff ok, just a problem with messenger... what about you
guys?
