windows live messenger uninstallation

a while back i deleted some things off my laptop
i thought i had uninstalled windows live messenger
and when i came to download and install it again
i found that the old version was still there
however, i cannot get rid of the old version
my computer says that it cant find the file to remove the programme
i did a search for the file and found it and tried uninstalling it that way
but it wouldn't work
can anybody help me on how to get rid of my older version of windows live
messenger please
