"Windows is starting up" screen not displayed

Hi,

I have a problem where as a result of some program installation or Windows
Update (can't pinpoint it), the "Windows is starting up" screen is not
displayed during booting. As a result, I cannot tell if the Windows is really
starting up or if there's a problem, especially if it takes too long, and I
cannot either monitor any disk check that occurs during the reboot because
the screen remains black during that phase. Booting in Safe More has the same
result except that the OS/Drivers list remains displayed during that phase.
When it gets to the Welcome to Windows logon screen, that displays fine.

I've tried the remedies I could find relating to the Welcome screen, but to
no avail. And the knowledge base hardly contains any info relating to the
"Windows is starting up" screen.

I'm running Windows XP Pro with SP3 and all my drivers are up-to-date. Can
anybody please help? I'd hate ot have to rebuild this system for something
that may be largely cosmetic but is a real nuisance.

Thanks

Hi WJB
Have a look here

Start/run msconfig . Click on the Boot.INI tab and make sure the /NOGUIBOOT
option is not selected, if it is then uncheck it.

Thanks, Bill. I checked the /NOGUIBOOT option and it is not selected. I did
check it then uncheck it in case some event handler executed upon the
check/uncheck action, and rebooted both times. Still no change. The blue
"Windows is starting up" screen with the two gold/yellow horizontal lines
about an inch from the top and bottom of the screen still does not display.
Any other thoughts on what I can try?

Thank you helping me out on this.

Bill,

Another question related to my previous reply to your reply. Is it possible
that the "Windows is starting up" screen file has been accidentaly deleted
or corrupted and is therefore skipped by Windows? And if so, what is its
name and location? I can copy it from another XP Pro computer.

Thanks again.

Hi wjb
I am not an expert by any means but I did Google for "Windows startup
screen" and it came up with a lot of interesting/informative websights. A
word of warning, be very careful if you try and edit the registry or you
could end up with a computer that won't boot at all.

Bill.

I think I just resolved it. I tried unsinstalling programs in reverse order
of installation and it turned out it was a bad AntiVirus update
installation. I got my "Windows is starting up" screen back, then I
re-installed the uninstalled programs in a slightly different order and I'm
back in business with all my installed programs and my screen as well. I
made backups at every step in case I needed to go back, as System Restore
doesn't always work 100% for me.

Thank you very much for your help. I also Googled as per your suggestion and
found many discussions which didn't really apply as most problems discussed
had more to do with video cards than anything else. However, the forums are
vey informative and I saved them all in my Favorites for future searching.
